Owls have a special place in our household. To begin with, we live on Owl Creek Road. Scattered throughout the house are a dozen or so figures of owls in wood, stone, and ceramic, as well as a few drawings of owls. Owls are in the neighborhood, and recently as I stepped out the back door a Screech Owl glided down no more than two feet over my head and perched in a piñon about fifteen feet away. So THE HIDDEN LIVES OF OWLS was a natural for me.When author Leigh Calvez became fascinated with owls she began taking trips to see different species, often with expert owl naturalists. Since Calvez lives in the Pacific Northwest, most of those trips took place in that region. In THE HIDDEN LIVES OF OWLS, Calvez writes about her owling missions and the birds she saw. The book is instructive for someone like me who has an affinity for owls but is not very knowledgeable about them. Serious students of owls, however, may find it rather simplistic. In addition, while Calvez touches upon some of the complicated issues relating to the prospects of long-term survival of several owl species, she does not discuss any in detail.The owls Calvez writes about are the following: Northern Saw-Whet Owls, Flammulated Owls, Snowy Owls, Northern Spotted Owls, Barred Owls, Burrowing Owls, Northern Pygmy Owls, Long-Eared and Short-Eared Owls, and Great Gray Owls.I learned a fair amount. For example, I had never read before -- or if I did, it had not stuck -- that the disk-like face of (most) owls funnels sound to their ears, which are asymmetrically placed, one higher than the other; this enables owls to better pinpoint prey in three dimensions during their nighttime hunting. (Pygmy Owls, which are daytime predators, rely on sight more than hearing, and they don't have the facial disk common to most owls.) I also learned about the asynchronous hatching practiced by most owls. They do not postpone incubation until all the eggs in the clutch are laid; instead they begin to incubate each egg immediately after it is laid, with the result that chicks in the same nest can be up to two weeks apart in age and development.I have several quibbles with the book. For my preferences, Calvez tends too much towards anthropomorphism, as if the owls she is watching think like her and have feelings like her. The book also is a tad too personal and sentimental for my taste. The writing is congenial, but at times rather mindless (for example, we are told that with life in the wild "there are no guarantees", and in describing a climb up a steep slope, Calvez writes "I slipped and slid, one step forward and two steps back" -- How, then, did she make it to the top?). Finally, I find the subtitle of the book -- "The Science and Spirit of Nature's Most Elusive Birds" -- rather fatuous. Still and all, I enjoyed the book.

Only about a third of this book is about owls at most; another third is about the author and another is gratuitous musings the editor (if any) neglected to excise. There are no photos or drawings of the owls or their habitats; nor, of the people or paraphernalia described in muddled detai. Each chapter has a handsome but iconic drawing of each owl that would be very nice on a calendar but don’t convey the particular spirit of the i particular owl portrayed. Finally, the writing is a slog. It you’re curious about these awesome creatures, there are much better alternatives.

I really enjoyed this book. It felt like a gentle step into the life of the woman writing it, and also into the lives of the birds that she found. I liked the personal comments she made about herself, as she worked and learned to see these birds. For those who didn't like her personal reflections, maybe the problem was in the title, referring to the science of these owls. Anyone can pick up a bird book, and read about the details of a particular bird, which this does have, but really what I liked was this woman's story as she visited and in some cases worked with some of the experts in the field. I could relate to those feelings, and enjoyed settling in and reading about the birds, and her. She did not write this as an expert, but as someone fascinated with owls, and interested in learning more, and experiencing their lives. I didn't get bored. I like the word gentle, to describe what she has created here.

This is a delightful book for anyone who loves the raptors. Naturalist Leigh Calvez describes her several adventures seeking to sight a variety of owl species in and around her home in Washington State and beyond. In some cases she tags along with the pros, helping to net and band the birds, from tiny Screech Owls to Snowy Owls and Great Greys. There are astounding facts on every page and commentary concerning species survival as ecological niches are affected by human populations. She is a bit too sentimental about her subjects, perhaps, in attributing human qualities; but that is easily forgiven in this informative and enjoyable book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For the hiker, naturalist, bird-watcher or enthusiast, this book is a real treat. The author participates in actual owl sightings, tagging and weighing specimens with ornithologists and adds profiles of each species for beginners to learn how best to spot owls.

An easy read but not as complete as I'd hoped. The author gives a lot of personal info- names, places, reactions and anecdotal info but leaves out many species. Primarily about Oregon, Washington ( her home on Bainbridge Island) and Alaska. A chatty saunter through the info.

A fantastic factuallywritten book, that reads like a novel. I loved this book so much I started it again as soon as I finished it because there's so much to understand about these beautiful birds!!

If you want to learn about owls, check your field books. If you want to know about Leigh Calvez, this is the book for you. There are a few bits of information, some hand wringing about loss of habitat and, sadly, serious loss of owls, but it's a tough slog to find them.

This book does exactly what is proclaimed by its title, it’s a pretty comprehensive NexStar user’s guide. If that’s the reason you want to make the purchase, you’ll be ok. But keep that in mind.The fact is, The author does his best to provide proper guidance. One can almost feel the his effort. And, that is my primary objection.....he tries to do too much.Indeed, there are many, many Celestron scope/mount combos that bare the label, “NexStar”. And the author makes a valid attempt to provide instructions for each and every one. In doing so, it is only natural that the info would be spread thin, with many lists concerning the proper way to use the mount to achieve a desired result.Because of the large volume of equipment that bare the NexStar name, I had to comb page after page to follow the instructions concerning my particular NexStar scope/mount combo. As far as I could discern, the instructions were correct and informative. But after a while, it becomes a laborious chore to follow along.The author does his best, to keep the reader interested. He tries to convey his enthusiasm for the product line. And that is what a reader would expect. However, there are only so many step by step processes one can endure.I believe this is a good referance book. One you keep on the shelf, only opened when needed. It’s use is similar that of your car manual. So, don’t buy this book expecting to enjoy the read...that’s unlikely to happen.If u buy it, be prepared to put it on the shelf, only to be opened in specific incidents.

My original copy is 10 years old and well used. The digital copy should weather better. For me, this is must read stuff for Celestron NexStars. I started with the NexStar 8i and now have the 9.25" CPC. I knew nothing and no one. Star parties are great but essentially everyone tends to there own equipment and you must learn to do the same. Well intentioned "misinformation" will cost money, time and grief. For me, telescopes, equipment and associated toys are expensive. This book helped me master my equipment and greatly complimented the manufactures manual. It is still my main reference bible and really, not a bad read. Also, there is a web site which updates this material and I recommend both for the starter.

Greetings,Very well written, but like everything that is computer operated by software or firmware, its guide books quickly become out dated.I just purchased a Celestron 6" refractor with an Advance VX GOTO mount. Save for a few tips and some operational myths dispelled, I was always reading about someone else's instrument. The Nexstar resource pages the author still operates online is perhaps more relevant and up-to-date.I'd pass on the book though unless you have purchased a used GOTO from 2000 - 2005.

This is a complete handbook for your Celestron telescope , it covers all you need to know plus additional good to know info ,however to my knowledge it would be great if they would update it ,otherwise ,great to have book

If you have a Celestron Nexstar series scope then this book is one of the best buys you can get yourself. Besides that, it's a nice little refresher on the generals of astronomy and ways to make the hobby more rewarding and enjoyable for yourself and others. It was better than I expected and at the time I bought it I had two Nexstars that I was toying around with, and this book helped me make the best use of both of them! Also a nice little Celestron history lesson!

This is a real review, I paid full price for this itemeven if you're not a complete noob to astronomy, this book is absolutely fantastic. lots of very useful information, hints, and lots of information you would not know unless you have many years of experience working with nexstar equipment. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone before spending any money on a telescope or accessories, it'll save you a lot of money by keeping you from buying stuff you don't really need

If you are not in this class of people, then there are other books that you might rather consider.I was, frankly, a little disappointed with this book. I was looking for something that was chock full of "secret tips" on how to use my NexStar telescope, but found that there were few tips available. Much of the information was general information about astronomical topics that an experienced amateur astronomer might already know. It did, however, contain some information specific to the NexStar scopes. And, I did learn some general things that I had not known before. So, if you are a NexStar owner, you spent a good deal of money on your telescope and this is an excellent first accessory, especially if you are a beginner in stargazing.So, why do I give such a lukewarm review to a book that I awarded five stars?? Well, if you are a NexStar owner, you should know about the web site that author Swanson runs, The NexStar Resource Site, [...]. If you are a NexStar owner and this is the first that you have heard of this site, then you owe it to yourself to check it out!! It has a wealth of current information that you will want to refer to from time to time. So, buy Mr. Swanson's book, if for no other reason than to support his site. One night many years ago, I had to get my, now adult, then 6 and 4 years old daughters to go to bed and call it a day.Of course, like any parent, I promised them that I'd read them a story.And they sort of bought that line, but they really would not settle down, and made it absolutely clear that they wanted to hear something different.So out of desperation, I grabbed this beloved book, which by then was a very faded falling apart yellowing non acid free paperback from near my desk in my home office and read them both a story in their shared bedroom.It was from this book and it was "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."Their eyes lit up and they were totally captivated and they settled down.They had never experienced anything like that story and they loved it.And that night I heard "more daddy, more daddy!!!!"So then I read them "Time Enough To Last," followed by "Third From The Sun," and partway through "Third From The Sun" they were sound asleep.After that, the problem was not getting them to go to bed.The problem became, as they would without parental pleading, wash up, brush their teeth and scoot into bed and almost always chant..."read, read, read more Twilight Zone."Yes, very quickly, every night, they wanted more than one episode story from this book read to them.And they loved it.Then when they had sleepovers in our home with their friends, an event every parent dreads as the pack of kids will almost never settle down for the night, our house was different.We became famous in the "sleepover circuit" of my kids and their friends as to having really cool bedtime stories.So we never ever had a problem of getting a pack of sleepover kids to call it a night.To a kid, we were the cool parents who did not just read them bed time stories.We were the cool parents who read the kids stories from the "Twilight Zone," not the stories that every kid had heard from Fairy Tale Books.It got to the point where, in our small town, the parents of sleepover kids would call and ask if it was really true that we read out kids stories from the Twilight Zone.Occasionally, one of the moms would come over the day before to check out what she had heard from her kids, my kids pals.And over coffee my wife and one or more of the moms of sleepover kids would read a story together and pick out what stories were deemed appropriate for little Susie, Liz, Tonya, Morgan, and more.Well it worked, and now today, my adult kids are reading the plot summaries to their kids from this book, who, and I've seen them scramble off to bed instantly for the nightly reading of bedtime stories from "The Twilight Zone Companion."Try it, your kids will love the stories.In fact these stories got my kids totally interested in Science Fiction, so the "X-Files" and "Star Trek Voyager." became staples of my kids viewing.Note that the stores in this book, all from "the Twilight Zone," have now become children's middle school literature.In some of the English Class anthologies, "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street," is featured.Have fun and do take your sons and daughters to the "Twilight Zone," they will go to bed and then sleep without a fuss.

I can see from my Amazon history that I bought this book in 2008. I still searched the house to pull it out for the annual SyFy Twilight Zone Marathon. I love looking up the stories behind the episode. It is a little hard to find episodes in the book if you don't know the title or exactly which episode, but it is worth the hunt. I still enjoy using this book as a reference and very grateful to the author that he took the time to write it.

I purchased the series before i purchased the book. I am a person that likes to know facts about a particular movie or show. IMDB gives you only so much but this book gives you anything you want to know about this great series. From cast, locations, and any news about the directors,actors and little known facts about each episode. If you loved the show you enjoy this book.

This is a remarkable companion to the iconic landmark television series. It gives you everything you want to know, and then some - all the credits for each and every episode, story summaries, opening and closing commentary by the great Rod himself - and all presented in a logical, thorough, well researched format. Easy to use and fun to read - without even watching the show! Highly recommended to all Twilight fans out there.

This book is excellent. It has the plot line, cast and comments from every single episode of the series. It even tells you little secrets that you didn't know. If you are a Twilight Zone fan like I am, you will buy this book and add it to your collection. Very interesting and informative.

The book has some great information and I love the episode guide. But don't read about episodes you haven't seen as this book definitely contains spoilers. Also, I think the author is unnecessarily critical of some episodes in his analysis. Still, this is a must have for any avid Zone fan.

This is a good companion book to an outstanding television series. Each of the episodes is reviewed in varying amounts of detail (a weakness which the author allowed to bleed though into his work) from very detailed and complete with character quotes to a sketchy couple of lines.
