Great Local information for our upcoming trip, need to make more than one trip here

I recently, for 10 days, drove around New Mexico (5th largest State among the 50), seeking this and experiencing that, and I took with me five guides (Moon's, Fodor's, Off the Beaten Path, Roadside History and N.M. Sanctuaries, Retreats, and Sacred Places). Though Fodor's was the best guide for selecting accommodations and eateries, Moon's guide excelled in historical and tidbit descriptions.What set this guide apart is the history, superior maps (especially compared to Fodor's) and Stephen Metzger's straightforward, clear, writing style. Metzger's introduction to New Mexico section is outstanding (The Land, Flora and Fauna, History, Economy and the People). This is an important contribution to understanding the State completely skipped by Fodor's. Also, Metzger's history of regions, cities, towns and pueblos is exemplary.Where the guide falters is the weak descriptions of accommodations and restaurants, IE "The hotel is distinctly decorated" or "a discreet little inn with 12 rooms on an alleyway". After reading Fodor's vivid descriptions this was a serious step back. Also few, if any, website addresses for lodgings are found, and in a 2003 publication that is a serious omission. (Fodor's has website addresses).If you are primarily interested in finding the best dining experiences and great accommodations Fodor's is my pick. But, for a State guide that is strong on overview and excellent in the history are you can't beat Metzger (however, also check out Roadside History of New Mexico). Strongly Recommended

Moon Handbooks' New Mexico Guidebook (6th Edition) was the second Moon Handbook that I purchased. The first one I purchased was Nevada by Deke Castleman (also 6th Edition) - which is very helpful and fun to read, by the way. Unfortunately, it was obvious while reading the New Mexico guidebook that the author, Stephen Metzger, does not live in New Mexico, and often seems unfamiliar with the state throughout the book. I really would have liked to have more information about the city of Rio Rancho (only one page for a city of about 66,000 people!). I have traveled to New Mexico twice since purchasing this book and have discovered a lot of beautiful places, good restaurants, and unusual retail establishments that were not mentioned. Although it does have some good information (better than most about New Mexico), this book barely scratches the surface.

Terrific information, a must buy for anyo camper/hiker visiting New Mexico.

It was sadly out of date; newer version, which I perused, didn't seem a whole lot better. I visited these countries in May 2012, and the guide was only useful for some historical facts, which, really, could be obtained elsewhere.

I have always been a great admirer and user of Lonely Planet guidebooks, but this time they really produced a rather poor work. On one side I can't blame them, as the region is hard to get to know, and this probably remains the best guidebook about it anyway. On the other hand, lots of data are simply wrong, for which I can see no reasonable excuse. For example, the guidebook says that there are daily flights betwen Tbilisi and Yerevan, while there have been no scheduled flights since the collapse of the USSR in 1989 ! And contrary to what is written, KLM, Northwest or Alitalia have never flown to Yerevan. The guidebook says that there are buses from Armenia to Turkey, and on the very same page it also says that it is impossible to get from Armenia to Turkey except via Georgia... Overall, there is very little this guidebook can tell you on how to get around within the region. The guidebook gives plenty of information on hotels in Tbilisi which are supposedly good, while they are now filled by refugees (surely an interesting and touching thing to see, but not where you might wish to stay). The major internet café they recommend in Tbilisi does not exist. Many addresses are simply wrong (either old or non-existent). The book makes a lot of fuss about the corruption and unclear regulations of Armenian and other border officials, which is not the case (for example in Armenia you CAN get a visa at any border for 25 $ which is valid for 3 days, and when you leave you pay 3 $ for each day you oversayed your visa) - no corruption, no problems. The book gives lots of concerns about safety and other issues which are unnecessary, and especially in its Armenia section it seems to be biasedly 'anti-local' (something one would never expect from a guidebook). Overall, it seems poorly researched and not always well written. The chapter on Nagorno-Karabakh is ridiculously short (4 pages), not to mention the one on Abkhazia (less than two pages !). Nevertheless, some information is indeed useful and sometimes even correct, and you are better off taking this guide with you to the region, rather than being without it. Just take its advice with a lot of caution, and don't take any of its data for granted.

I tend to be a fairly big fan of Lonely Planet's style of travel guidebooks - I've used them for travels many times, simply because I like the way they're structured and enjoy all the background information that accompanies their guidebooks. Unfortunately, there are a few duds that slip through the cracks, and this one is unquestionably one of the big ones. Granted, this is a guidebook to one of the most rapidly changing areas of the world when it comes to tourism and travel, but this book doesn't even seem like it was ever in synch with the reality in the South Caucasus. The Azerbaijan section is basically satisfactory, but hardly overwhelming. Sadly, that's the best can be said, as the other two sections are very much lacking. While the Georgia one is sloppy and not at all geared towards what a traveler really needs or wants, the Armenian section is downright awful, with a glaring lack of practical information and even basic facts.Maps go from fuzzy and confusing to completely unreliable, and restaurant listings often lack any sort of notion of prices (or are repeatedly geared for people hardly on a shoestring budget). Sometimes author recommendations are even non-existent - like the 'most recommended restaurant' in Batumi, which seems to have been bulldozed. The author for the Georgian section speaks of a gradually developing agro-tourism and homestay industry in the country, but somehow doesn't bother researching it almost at all (although you get plenty of listings for defunct Soviet hotels!). Illogically, sections on towns and other areas never include the names in Armenian and Georgian (apart from a few in an inadequate glossary in the back of the book), leaving you clueless as to what they'd be unless you spent a long time actually learning the national alphabets thoroughly. And, why throw the individual countries' history sections together into one general, regional history, especially given the unique backgrounds of each people? So much more depth could have been added to the book, but one gets the impression that the authors were racing towards a publishing deadline (especially the one for Armenia!). There's supposedly an update in the works, and it is much needed. For now though, check out instead the Trailblazer guide to Azerbaijan (*much* better coverage, even in the small section on Georgia) and the Rediscovering Armenia book, which is available either in country or on the internet - both of these actually do justice to the region.

Very solid guidebook, packed with good information, maps, tips, and very good detail. I highly recommend it, especially for Armenia which I am most familiar with.These 10 year old reviews for the first edition need to be removed, or associated only with that ISBN number, they are doing customers on Amazon a disservice here.For those who want to supplement this book, "Rediscovering Armenia" is a free online wiki guide to Armenia's monuments.

This guide book follows the standard Lonely Planet format of providing not only information about the country, but a wide selection of accommodation and tips for the independent traveller. In my opinion, it does a fair job. The book, however, has to compare to other guide books on the same region. And there are a few very good ones around, e.g. Roger Rosen and the Bradt book on Georgia, which did better. I found the book rather thin. It is full of useful facts, but failed to convey the magic of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. A good guide makes people who do not know the country at all want to go there. This one doesn't. Perhaps it would be better to beef it up a little in the next edition rather than concentrate only on listing towns.

Can't recommend you purchase this book. The printing is significantly less than optimal--to say the least. Any graphic with any detail is very poorly reproduced in this book. The simple graphics are ok but when you get to anything with any detail the printing is so poor you can't see what the pattern really is.

Good book.

it was a present for someone who likes chinese culture but she want to do more. So this book show her the culture and she makes little things now.

I like the pictures. I kind of wish there were more animal pictures and the pictures were bigger but I can always blow them up on my computer.

It was just what I expected. It is a thin booklet (8 1/2 x 11) with a lot of chinese patterns in it. I wanted to scrapbook my pictures from our trips to China. The booklet is entirely done in black and white. I suppose it depends on what you want to use it for, but I am very happy with it.

So I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to love this deck. Props where they are due: I was thrilled by the packaging, quality of cards and book. JHigh Quality and innovative box design. 5 Stars for packaging. 5 stars to Esther for her Tarot Meanings. The book is very well written and the quality of the pages and binding are also superb. Sadly the stars stop there. Thus the low rating. Becasue, after all, after 40 years of reading Tarot and many many decks in my collection, I didn't pay big bucks for the book and packaging. I wanted to READ with these. With Clients and/or myself. The artist is talented, no doubt. But there lacked a deep understanding of the Tarot as the imagery and meaning often clashed. The art itself seemed to fight its way off the cards, each color and shape vying for attention so that the whole card became a riot of colors and shapes and the feeling was not friendly or inviting. I own the The Day of the Dead Deck, and Tatoo Tarot, so I'm not afraid of dark imagery, but there needs to be coherence. Place them next to one another and it's a neon art factory with so much packed on to one card that it's a headache. My teen daughter and dear friend who also excitedly sat with me opening the deck were of the same opinion. In some cases had the artist simply enlarged the main character (see the Starman image on the box? Imagine if the card had been cropped like that, the face and torso, not an entire image of shape color and alien writing and on and on). But there were other challenges with this deck. Many times the main characters seemed forced rather than owing their status. Their backgrounds commanded more attention than they did. In other cases the image was just not in keeping with the intended meaning. The slashed up and bloody prince of cups standing with his silent rebel yell but not much else to make you see he had a hero potential. Then you look in the book and see that the writer of the meanings described beautifully what the Prince should stand...worlds apart from the image you are looking at. It's as if the artist and the writer did not have the same interpretation. The cards seem to be desperate to say something...struggling more to be cool than meaningful. They needed editing. The Kings face (many of the faces) are marred by lines drawn over the features. There is no warmth and indulgence with the King of Cups! He seems just as remote as all the other characters that show up. You don't get a sense of moving from the four elements, nor intellect to emotion to passion, nor the journey the Fool takes. They all seem like razor sharp characters waiting to consume you in their own indulgences. The three of us were so very disappointed. THAT said, I believe if the artist was willing to introduce feelings of compassion, fear, sorrow, loss, balance, hope, and support into an otherwise intimidating set of characters then their next Tarot collaboration would be AMAZING. My friend summed it up perfectly, 'maybe the artist needed to make this an oracle deck because I don't feel Tarot was quite understood.' I'm still shaking my head. I really want to love these cards.

I have to ding this for the poor quality card stock. You have to be extremely delicate shuffling the cards or they will bend. *What’s the point of a tarot deck you can’t shuffle?*The artwork is definitely beautiful and there is a lot here to work with, which makes it all the MORE disappointing it’s on such poor stock. Surely you could have spent less money on the box presentation and used it for better stock?This should be priced at least $10 less because of the disappointing stock. I’m really driving that point home but that’s because it is SUCH a disappointment.

The artwork is very nice...busy but nice. However, the BOOK BINDING IS HORRIBLE! It is SO tight that you have to squash the book flat to read the end of the sentences. Also the glue has leaked into the pages in some areas so that when you try to pry them apart, the page is damaged. Having to fight this book in order to read it makes this a loser in my mind. Looks like the money went into the box and not the quality of the binding or the cards. Thumbs down.

Pros: The artwork on the cards is spectacular. No borders on the cards really allows the artwork to shine.The box the cards come in is gorgeous. Heavy and the design is pure David Bowie gloriousI wasn't expecting a book with the cards and while I haven't taken a deep dive into the material, the book is almost two hundred pages long and every card is pictured in the book with at least a page or better description of the card and it's meaning.Love the deck. I cannot wait to spend some time getting to know it.Cons: The cards are flimsy. I compared them to my other decks and the cardstock used is noticeably thinner than the cards in my other decks. Considering the quality of the deck, the book, and the box, I was a little surprised that they chose to use substandard cardstock.The back image on the cards is disappointingly bland. Again, surprising considering how remarkable all the artwork on the cards.Still, I decided to go with a five star rating because I would buy again and would recommend the deck to my friends. Maybe in future editions they will upscale the cardstock.

Like most reviewers, I cannot fault the art, I purchased them just for that reason. It's bold and vibrant, and just a bit dark. However, I've had playing cards thicker than these. I mean, given their size, they're too unwieldy to properly shuffle, and I don't have particularly small hands.So, in summary:Better cardstock.Make them half an inch smaller.

I love this deck and book. I purchased one to keep and one to use. The art is gorgeous and the book is truly a gift. However the card stock is flimsy and the cards a big for a lady's hand. With the deck being so big and flimsy, I will have to be very careful using them. People in the tarot community have been dealing with cheap card stock for some time. Trouble using these cards is known. I still gave it 5 stars as the beauty and link to Bowie are worth it. Buy an extra set for keeps and one for use. Maybe later editions can be made on better paper stock. I wanted to come back and edit. I have large decks and a collection and decks I've used since the 1980"s. It isn't so much that the deck is large it's the card stock making it hard to shuffle as it is so thin and bendy. The book binding is also cheap and cracks when opened. I don't know how long it will last intact. Please put out another edition of cards and book with better stock and binding. I would buy it. Now it is more of a collector item for me.
