This most recent effort by John Grisham follows an attorney who practices in the Fifteenth Circuit of the United States in federal and state court. His name is Sebastian Rudd and what makes Rudd unique compared to most attorneys is his willingness to accept clients no other attorney would take. These range for an accused child molester/murderer, a rage prone boxer, a crime don eager to escape death row, and a man with ties to human trafficking. His most important client, however, is himself for the often acrimonious custody hearings he faces against his ex-wife. Accompanying him at all times are his silent bodyguard Partner and a heavily armored van that serves as both office and transportation.The novel unfortunately often felt like a collection of short stories pasted together, with Rudd as the only figure who maintains a continuous narrative. Rather than focus on one trial throughout the entire book, every thirty to forty pages Rudd will win or lose a particular case and then move on. While this may accurately reflect the life of defense attorneys, it unfortunately does little to flesh out the characters into ones the reader can actively sympathize with or despise. Similarly, despite Rudd's repeated proclamations that he is a rogue lawyer, he actually is a pretty honest one. While he is willing to pay cops for information and occasionally represents bad characters, about the only sanction-worthy act he commits throughout the course of the novel is bribing a court clerk to get a particular judge to hear his civil suit.Despite these flaws, Grisham clearly displays that he was (and still is) an attorney. He has a good handle on the minutiae of courtroom criminal procedure and paints a portrait of an attorney whose character, while exaggerated, is believable. He also creates an interesting series of cases for the attorney to handle. The ending comes somewhat abruptly, but it is in such a manner that I suspect Mr. Grisham has a sequel possibly in mind. If he eventually does write one, I will be sure to read it.

Sebastian Rudd is a lawyer who defends scumbags. He is unafraid of the inherent dangers that accompany many of these defenses, and he is a fearless negotiator who tries all angles available to him to ensure that justice is done even to the most unsavory characters. The public thinks he is a scumbag himself for defending such vermin, and many of the vermin that he defends don’t deserve a lawyer of his caliber, and they don’t appreciate his talent or his ability to play with his gloves off. He is tough and always seems to operate best when he is right along the borderline of ethical behavior. He is divorced, his ex-wife is an industrial grade bitch, and he loves cage fighting in his off time. He shoots pool at weird hours, and his office is in a van, driven by his bouncer, Partner. The book weaves its’ way in and out of a number of seedy people with nasty legal problems, and he is in constant danger from many different places. He deals with criminal behavior from the police in one instance, and he tries to defend a fighter who killed a referee in another case. An assortment of people who are mostly on the fringe make this a very interesting read, with no real lasting value other than entertainment. This book has a scattered plot; it seems to jump from one story to another without too much tie. Grisham attempts to make connections by concocting some wild events that give the story a contrived feel. The end is very unsatisfying. It leaves too many loose ends dangling, and it feels like the author just got tired of writing, so he quit. All in all, a satisfactory book to entertain. It is high on entertainment, low on value.

Rogue Lawyer is the newest John Grisham legal thriller about defense attorney Sebastian Rudd.This book is about Sebastian Rudd, a defense attorney who represents unpopular clients and has no issues pushing the bounds of ethics to defend his clients.  The book is written in the first person as Sebastian Rudd narrates to us his thought process on his varies clients he represents and his dealings with prosecutors and law enforcement. This gives us a better understanding on why he does things and how he justifies them, as he goes all out for each of his various clients. We also get a good look at his personal life and the issues he has going on.  I really enjoyed this book. Book moves at a quick pace right from the beginning. I especially liked the first person point of view. Which I think gives us a better understanding of the character Sebastian Rudd. I'm hoping Sebastian Rudd becomes a series, as I would like to see more of this character. I found him to be a fascinating character.I definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy mystery/thriller books. John Grisham fans will not be disappointed. Â

A preview of a character and a series of plots that the industry that is John Grisham hopes will keep the writers' room busy between his novels and employed for many volumes falters on the first one. Plot elements strain credulity, the writing style almost a parady of hard-boiled detective series, think Raymond Chandler particularly in his description of female characters, and the characters seem to have emerged off the pages of graphic novels. The rogue lawyer--is he really meant to be as unappealing as he seems--lacks nuance and depth, his sidekick, Partner provides muscle, and the lesbian ex-wife and perfect kid are straight off-the shelf of left-over characters. There are some Grisham moments--the criminal escaping his execution--but why is he so desperate for money that he sends his muscle to intimidate our hero--the effecting commentary on young black men in prison and the compulsive liar with the info on the missing girl who finally gets tedious with his knowledge of our hero's movements. Well, Stephen King is doing it, JK Rawlings is doing it, Nelson DeMille has done it, so why not John Grisham and his writers' room?

A few reviews considered this book dull, one said it was a "slog"? I have to disagree. I thought it was most interesting and the author, brilliant, especially since he was writing for his own uses. Bradford never meant his diary to be published so his thoughts are candid, colorful and vivid. His accounting of those first settlers is daunting. You need to have a playbook to choreograph the deaths' births and animal couplings. So many of our ancestors died early in their adventure that its a miracle the US got populated at all. Our Indians, rather than hatchet carrying heathens were far more sophisticated and opportunistic than I left high school believing. Anyway. This book has opened my eyes to the realities of our nations beginnings. To me it seemed like I was reading a great, intricate novel about some really interesting characters and situations. In fact, I think I was.

Modernity is so overwhelming, from school, advertising, print, video, movies, politics, etc., all things push human life and thinking one way. One way to find another opinion, perhaps the only way, is to reach into the past. This collection of letters by several key players and comments by Bradford, provide a very different insight. What a gift!''O sacred bond,—whilst inviolably preserved! How sweet and precious were its fruits! But when this fidelity decayed, then their ruin approached. Oh that these ancient members had not died (if it had been the will of God); or that this holy care and constant faithfulness had still remained with those that survived. But, alas, that still serpent hath slyly wound himself to untwist these sacred bonds and ties. I was happy in my first times to see and enjoy the blessed fruits of that sweet communion; but it is now a part of my misery in old age to feel its decay, and with grief of heart to lament it. For the warning and admonition of others, and my own humiliation, I here make note of it.''This paragraph was added decades after the initial writing. Bradford was 'humiliated' from the loss of the 'sacred bond', that is, the deep religious faith and devotion that bonded the first settlers. This account highlights the benefits of sincere Bibical faith when applied with wisdom - and the pain when lost or misused for selfish ends.Reading this history requires adjusting to the style of that time. Assumes the reader can follow extended lines of reasoning, is familiar with Bibical stories, recognizes Seneca, Plato, Cato, Paul, etc.. The education, the vast reading and even more, the understanding of these thinkers, seems unlike modern writers.For example, Plato's theory of government, communism, was first implemented. Horrible result - starvation! Now, private property -''So they began to consider how to raise more corn, and obtain a better crop than they had done, so that they might not continue to endure the misery of want. At length after much debate, the Governor with the advice of the chief among them, allowed each man to plant corn for his own household, and to trust to themselves for that; in all other things to go on in the general way as before. So every family was assigned a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number with that in view,—for present purposes only, and making no division for inheritance,—all boys and children being included under some family.''What result?''This was very successful. It made all hands very industrious, so that much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been by any means the Governor or any other could devise, and saved him a great deal of trouble, and gave far better satisfaction. I am a history buff (nut?) I recently read 5 books about the colonies and settling of America . This is not the best I have read but it was written over years starting in 1630 until Willism Bradford died in 1659. Knowing how authentic it had to be written as he lived it gave me sooo much pleasure to know how real it was instead of hindsight writing by someone who did not live it!

This book was "translated" into understandable language without taking away from the actual text. For example, Thou is changed to you. It makes it much faster reading. I have enjoyed this book immensely. I thought it might be a bit boring but wanted to have it in my library for reference. Well....it is not boring! I've learned so much. The details are great.

This book is about the American ancestors or the persecuted pilgrims who traveled first from England to Holland and stayed (1608-1620) and then on the ship called Mayflower to Plymouth, New England (1620).William Bradford, the author of the book, was elected the first governor for five times and the scope of the book lasted about fifty two years (1608-1660).Bradford told the story of the settlers from the original planting corn, using the wampum as money, to the dispersion of the population on account of more wealth.I notice a lot of American virtues that grew out from this period such as you help those who are close to you in the wilderness, American women do men's jobs as well, emphasis on strong people, necessity causes changes, the effects from both good and bad men alike.The story was told mainly by presenting historical documents interspersed with his narrations. It is rather tedious and befuddled since I know very little context of the situations that the documents were referring to. But it will be of great scholastic use for historians and American scholars who need original accounts.And the reason for vacating England for America was:"to advance the kingdom of Our Lord Jesus Christ and to enjoy the liberties of the gospel in purity and peace." Some months ago I read a review that said that this book was written for those with large flocks...not really practical for the backyard chicken owner. Because of that review I decided not to purchase the book. But when I saw it in my local library I checked it out.I started taking notes of things I wanted to remember. After having a full page of notes after just getting to page 64 I decided it would be worth it just to buy the book.I haven't come across any information yet that I don't feel is relevant to me (have only 6 chickens), but if and when I do, the overwhelming amount of very useful tips and techniques I've already taken from book will cause any superfluous information to be a minor point, not even worth considering.I highly recommend this book.

Very thorough! Covers the most important things you need to know about raising chickens from egg to putting meat on the table. (Unless you want to keep chickens solely as pets) I can see myself returning to this book to use for reference or sharing with friends! Covers things like breeds, bird size, egg size, how to start chicks and the times and seasons that are perfect for raising chickens and also goes over symptoms for illnesses, even in the end it shows how to process or dress your chickens for food! I feel like this book has everything a beginner like me would need.

My family and I have recently started raising chickens. I have been looking for a book for some time. Something with just the information we need. We just plan to have a small flock, of less than a dozen or so, to raise for eggs and meat. Most of the information in this book seems to be geared towards raising a small flock. There is some info about larger flocks. It is full of very useful information. It explains everything from how to heal wounded chickens yourself to how to select a chicken for butchering. It also has info on how to make your own feeders and waterers so that you don't have to purchase them. I was very impressed with this book and intend to purchase more of Storey's books as we decide to expand on our self sufficiency. Whether you're raising in your backyard or you have a barn and pasture, I recommend this book for anyone just starting out with chickens.

This is an awesome book. If you have ever had any questions, or have ever considered raising your own chickens, this is the book for you. We were "gifted" with 4 laying hens by a neighbor. I was raised on a farm, but I hadn't had my own chickens in more than 20 years, so I thought I could use a little professional help. That's exactly what I found when I opened the book. It is very well organized, the index is easy to navigate, so you don't spend a lot of time wandering aimlessly in an effort to find the answer to a specific issue. The book is full of good, useable information, and is an excellent reference tool for anyone, amateur, novice or possibly even the odd chicken whisperer.

I have a single chicken (‘Bertha’) that showed up one day a year or two ago. Her boyfriend (‘Rudy’) came first then she came a day later. She’s been around all this time. I needed to learn about chickens quickly and this book, along with other sources of reference, came in handy!

While it is geared towards a larger keepers. It still a good place to get information in regards to keeping chickens. For my self i am just starting with a few hens. the wife is already pushing for a rooster and expanding the flock.Read it with intention that if you intend to expand your flock. This book is for you. It does stay away from pushing the go all organic idea. For myself that just is not as practical idea as some might think. But I would urge you to buy and jeep it handy as it does contain knowledge you will find handy down the road.I do have this on my kindle, but am old fashion. The physical book allows me to walk out in to my back yard put it down with out worrying if moisture is about to destroy a $200+ USD piece of electronics.. LOL

Packed with helpful information and a great resource for keeping chickens. A must if you a new to raising chickens for eggs or meat. I have kept chickens for years and still learned some valuable information to make my life even easier and my chickens happier.

I'm more than half way through this book and found it much better as an intro to Pandas than the two other books I began reading: "Pandas Cookbook" by Petrou and "Python for Data Analysis" by Wes McKinney (the creator of Pandas). Both of the latter are fine books but Chen's book is more concise: he explains a method, shows one or two good examples, then moves on. Perfect for the way I learn. (I have 14 years of Python experience.)

I liked Jared Lander's "R for Everyone", the earlier entry in Addison-Wesley's "Data & Analytics" series, so I was looking forward to "Pandas for Everyone" - and mentioned it in my November 2017 review of "Pandas Cookbook" by Ted Petrou, as a just-around-the-corner alternative to wait for. Privately, I wondered if "Pandas Cookbook", a very decent book, was going to be completely eclipsed by "Pandas for Everyone" after just one month on the market.Now, I don’t think that is going to happen. Between the two titles - and the two, along with (of course) Wes McKinney's "Python for Data Analysis", are, in my opinion, the only Pandas titles worth considering - I prefer Petrou's, as a book with more substance and clarity. By all means, "Pandas for Everyone" is a good, original book, but one that is visibly under-edited, which makes its presentation less effective than it could be. There is less Pandas in it than in "Pandas Cookbook" - on the other hand (and this may be a plus for many readers), a couple of chapters are given to illustrations of statistical and machine-learning algorithms. (Applied to Pandas dataframes - that's the Pandas connection).My advice to a Pandas learner would be to get "Pandas Cookbook", "Pandas for Everyone", and "Python for Data Analysis", see whose style you prefer, and leave 1-2 books for further study.

In contrast, Pandas for Everyone opens with an extended discussion of the steps involved with reading in and manipulating data. For the most part, chapters are bite sized and self contained. However, the examples are basic and I had to supplement this book with Wes Mckinney's "Python for Data Analysis: Data Wrangling with Pandas, NumPy, and IPython" and Jake Vanderplas "Python Data Science Handbook" in order to fully understand what was going on under the hood.

The author has a very well organized way to present the concepts of data analysis (i.e. the what) and the tools (i.e. the how to part) without aiming to high in the complexity not boring the reader with the basics of python as many other books about Pandas.Best book in the market bridging the gap between basics and intermediate levels. Very practical, concise, and very engaging reading experience.

Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen has been a children's librarian for more than 25 years, and has worked in public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries, non-profit libraries, children's museums, preschools, home-daycares and more. She has three children (who are now all adults!), a wonderful husband, and lots of stuffed animals. Her wealth of personal experience combined with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for giving all children equal chances to be successful has led to the development of the Mother Goose on the Loose early literacy program, the publication of several books, and the production of a few CDs. I wanted to see what the program was based upon.

This resource is a no-brainer purchase for librarians, teachers, and day care workers. But parents (and grandparents!) should pick up a copy too. This would make a great baby shower gift for new parents. The author writes with the authority and intelligence of someone with a PhD, the experience of someone who has been a practicing librarian for years, and the sensitivity of a mother. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised (after surfing around on the web) to discover that Betsy Diamant-Cohen actually is all those things! No wonder this is such a great resource! Highly recommended.
