About the Author

Isaiah Berlin was a Fellow of All Souls and New College, Professor of Social and Political Theory, and founding President of Wolfson College. He also held the Presidency of the British Academy. He died in 1997. Henry Hardy is a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford, and is one of Isaiah Berlin's Literary Trustees. He has edited several other books by Berlin, and is currently preparing his letters and his remaining unpublished writings for publication.

This volume presents Berlin's main essays on Liberty, including the "Four Essays on Liberty", considered by himself as his most important book. They are preceded by a long "Introduction" which explains his thought and the profound debates to which it gave birth. "Political Ideas in the Twentieth Century" explains the historical-philosophical genesis of the great schools of thought that dominated the turbulent XX Century and which can basically - with an infinity of subtleties, minor coincidences, and internal contradictions - be synthesized in the division between those schools that tried to find totalizing - and frequently totalitarian - solutions for human problems, at least the ones pertaining to public affairs, and those other schools that tried to discover the basic rules of human interaction and respect, building upon which those individuals and the groups voluntarily formed by them may pursue their ends and ideas in an interference-free environment, even taking into account the inevitable confusions and chaos that may ensue. In the background, there is the old and never resolved tension between "security" and "freedom": between the sacrifice of doubt and dissent lest a pretended harmony and consensus on means and ends perils, on the one hand, and the uncomfortable acceptance of a certain degree of cacophony, ups and downs, and conflict, which nevertheless allows for a fecund interplay of the different individuals' freedoms and the fruits of imagination in action."The Historical Inevitability" portrays the anxiety, reinforced by the perceived accuracy of prediction of the sciences, to discover the "laws" of History, analogous to sciences' laws, which allow us to find causal and necessary explanations to the results of the human interaction of millions of individuals, which are thus reduced to mere instruments or puppets of huge, impersonal and irresistible forces. This anxiety's children, Relativism and Determinism, annihilate the person and have produced chaos, confusion and great violence."Two Concepts of Freedom", the most famous and controversial of his essays, analyzes the difference between negative freedom (freedom "from"), and positive freedom (freedom "to"). Negative freedom rests at the base of individual dignity, and of course it's not absolute. Building from a basic consensus (John Rawls's "overlapping consensus"?) about absolutely unacceptable behaviors in a society (at the same time limits and guarantees of one's own freedom), the individual must be free to do as he pleases, given that he assumes responsibility for the consequences of his actions. Positive freedom is a paradox, since it can be either a complement or a negation of the negative type. It is the freedom to intervene in other people's affairs. In its "benign" version (although Berlin never makes this division explicit), positive freedom can be used to gather wills in favor of the common good. But in its "pernicious" version, this freedom can be used to impose on others behaviors unwanted by them, that is, to impose unacceptable limits to their negative freedom. Which is where it always, almost inevitably, tends to go. Therefore, the fundamental political struggle must be the permanent defense of the negative freedoms. It's difficult to find a more lucid and clear presentation of liberty's dilemmas, as well as of a definition of personal dignity."John Stuart Mill and the Ends of Life" presents MIll's thought, and above all the central epiphany that, very early on, defined his life: the discovery of emotions, that happiness can not be imposed and not even determined a priori; but that it is an uncertain and difficult task that, if ever, can only be reached, lost, and reappraised by each individual through his free and deliberate action, necessarily confusing, and only limited by other people's freedom. The divorce between morals and politics; interior life as the authentic life; morals and happiness as attributes of the individual's, and not of the whole polis; gave way perhaps to a great breathing room, to peace and intellectual progress.The volume closes with a "Final Retrospective" and three autobiographical texts which round up a magnificent edition of one of the richest, most original, freshest, and most provoking philosophical oeuvres of all time. A work that is more alive than ever, more needed, more authentic and contrary to the inanities of politicians, prophets, ideologues, and other sunder current and permanent charlatans. The Late Isaiah Berlin was authority on philosophy and a historian of ideas. Born in Latvia, he moved to Russia with his parents when he was six. As an eight year-old he witnessed the May Revolution and the October Bolshevik Revolution that installed Lennin and instituted the Soviet reign of terror. He escaped to England with his family in 1921 where he was educated at St. Paul's School and Oxford, University. His early experience with totalitarianism colored his life's work in the world of ideas and throughout his career he was an articulate and sometimes lonely voice for liberty and the liberal, pluralistic society. This book "Liberty" is a newly edited and expanded edition of Berlin's most famous work "Four Essays in Liberty." Since his death, his editor Henry Hardy had drawn together his books and essays and they have been assembled in new editions. In "Liberty" he sets out to follow the concept of Liberty. In one of the most illuminating essays he sets out to answer the question: "What is Political Liberty" which then segues into the "The Birth of Greek Individualism." In "Two Concepts of Liberty" he takes western intellectuals to task for the results of the dangerous ideas that they heralded. He cites Henrich Heine who warned us that "philosophical concepts in the stillness of a professor's study could destroy a civilization." In his essay "Historical Inevitably" he attacks the Marxist notion that there are inevitable stages of history, that one stage follows another as winter follows fall and he traces the path of thought in the past terrible epoch in "Political Ideas in the 20th Century." Each of the essays are thoughtful, trenchant and well argued. In a time when far too many intellectuals still adhere to ideas that were the foundation of terror, Isaiah Berlin's advocacy and exploration of human freedom should find a wide audience.

Considering I was a Psych major about the time this book first made an impact, I don't know how I missed it. I mean, 12 million (!) copies in print. What a phenomena! The first thing that occurred as I read of his time in the concentration camps and the loss of his family members, including his pregnant wife was how he, or anyone else could survive such conditions and to take stock of my own blessings. One major point of the book is the idea that even during extreme suffering, life has meaning and a focus towards the future, even a bleak one can permit one to endure the bleakest of circumstance. This book is an interesting contrast to the Freudian approach as his program (called logotherapy) tends to focus on the future rather than the past; adjusts behavior and attitude; and tends to focus on a shorter term approach. It has many characteristics of cognitive behavioral therapy a more modern approach which tends to avoid the use of drugs to modify behavior. A most worthy read. It packs a lot of power in a fairly short read.

I read this in college and ordered again to read some 40 years later. Frankl relates the severe conditions in the concentration camp. Those without any purpose seemed to perish. Those that had developed purpose and meaning to the harsh conditions got out of bed every morning to face another unbearable day. this book is a classic. anything less than 5 stars would be a reflection on me.

When I first started reading Man's Search.... last week I was repulsed by the descriptions of the concentration camp experiences. How could humans be like that? Even though of course we have known about them for 70 years now, it is horrible to read about them. My temptation was to put the book aside, I told someone it was "depressing." But how glad I am that I persevered (because it was our Book Club choice this month.) Ultimately, this book is a hopeful paen to humankind's ability to rise above all suffering, to find our own individual meaning to our existence and in that way make sense of why we are in the world and why we should continue in it, doing our very best. This book transcends religion even as I recognize so much of what Frankl writes in my own religious beliefs.Truly a must read for people as soon as they are old enough to understand it--perhaps mid teenage years.

Viktor Frankl, an Austrian Jew, studied neurology and psychiatry with a focus on depression and suicide years before being arrested and deported by the Nazis in 1942. He defied odds by lasting three years in concentration camps. He lost his parents, brother, and his wife, who was pregnant. As doctors were in short supply in the camps, Frankl, after working as a slave laborer for some time, was able to work as a physician until his liberation.As his work prior to his time in the concentration camps had focused on depression and the prevention of suicide, he turned his focus to his own survival story and the people with whom he interacted in the camps. Why did some survive and others perish? What gave people the will to live? What gives life meaning?Some favorite moments:•Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler taught, but a quest for meaning.•Frankl saw three possible sources for meaning: in work (doing something significant), in love (caring for another person) and in courage during difficult times. Suffering in and of itself is meaningless; we give our suffering meaning by the way in which we respond to it.•Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, you freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you.•The truth- that love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and believe have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.•Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self. Whether or not he is actually present, whether or not he is still alive at all, ceases somehow to be of importance.•From all this we may learn that there are two races of men in this world, but only these two - the "race" of the decent man and the "race" of the indecent man. Both are found everywhere; they penetrate into all groups of society. No group consists entirely of decent or indecent people. In this sense, no group is of "pure race" - and therefore one occasionally found a decent fellow among the camp guards.•Now, being free, they thought they could use their freedom licentiously and ruthlessly. The only thing that had changed for them was the they were now the oppressors instead of the oppressed...Only slowly could these men be guided back to the commonplace truth that no one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them.•"Live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now."•So, let us be alert - alert in a twofold sense: Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. And since Hiroshima we know what is at stake.Highly recommend.

For some reason, I put off reading this book for many years. I had read excerpts that made me want to read it, but getting the book and sitting down to read it just seemed to not fit into my plans. I am so glad I finally read it. For about twenty years, I read many stories about World War Two. I wanted to know why no one helped the Jews. The most gratifying part of the reading was to find that there were many people that endangered their own lives and the lives of their families in order to hide Jews from the Germans. So, to follow a Jew into the concentration camps and read his observations was enlightening. Some survived the camps while others died. They all ate the same food, suffered the same diseases, performed the same work, and suffered the freezing temperatures. Why did some survive? That is what Victor Frankl wanted to know and with close observation, he saw the pattern that gave meaning to life and helped some survive while others gave up and died. His ideas are applicable to modern day problems as well as his methods.

As a political conservative, I found Noel Leo Erskine's introduction to the Rastafari religion both enlightening and challenging. Enlightening because it makes intelligible a set of beliefs that had hitherto seemed bizarre, challenging because the Rastafari religion is dead set against many of my own beliefs, not to mention my personal lifestyle and social position. (I am a comfortably middle-class, middle-aged, white American male, a meat-eater and consumer of alcohol.)I have of course been aware of Rastafarianism for many years, but only recently have I taken a closer look at its history, beliefs, and practices. Among those beliefs that had previously seemed utterly crazy was the idea that Emperor Haile Selassie was/is the second coming of Christ and literally God incarnate. I had asked myself how any sane person could believe this. But, on reflection, it is now not so hard to see. Ethiopia has a long tradition both in history and legend as a center of a mystical form of Christianity and as a center of an African dynasty with its roots deep in antiquity and with fascinating Biblical connections going back to Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.When Haile Selassie (Ras Tafari) ascended to the throne in the 1930s, his celebrity spread to the Caribbean, where Leonard Howell and others saw him as the realizition both of Biblical prophecy and of a more recent prophecy, attributed to Marcus Garvey, that a great leader would emerge in Ethiopia as a signal to Blacks around the world that the time of their deliverance was near. Although Garvey did not personally view Selassie as literally God incarnate, he did see him as the embodiment of Black aspirations and as in some sense a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy.The divinization of Selassie was left to Howell and the later Rastas, and the transition of Selassie from Emperor to God is now not so difficult to see. It is hard for whites such as myself to appreciate the extent to which Blacks perceived Jesus as a specificially White Jesus, as a White God and a European God. But such an attitude is totally understandable when one considers that the Christian religion was implictly and explicitly associated with European colonialism and American racism. So the need of Blacks for a Black God, a Black Christ, is not so hard to understand, and the selection of Haile Selassie, bathed in the warm glow of Ethiopian mystery and Biblical prophecy concerning Ethiopia, was as likely a candidate for divinization as any.Some will say that the Rastas' Biblical exegesis is erroneous, that it is based on incorrect readings of the Bible, and that these readings are arbitrary and self-serving. But the very same thing could be said about the origins of Christianity or any religion. Obviously Jews think that Christians have misused Biblical prophecy, and both Jews and Christians will claim that Islam has distorted the Jewish/Christian Bible. Many scholare today believe that Jesus never claimed to be God, and that this belief evolved over time, contrary to Biblical passages which seem to deny that very doctrine of the Trinity which later became Christian orthodoxy.One may ask the question: in their heart of hearts, do Rastas really believe in the divinity of Haile Selassie, or is it rather an expression of a contrarian mentality, i.e., you (Christians) have your White God, so we will create our Black God. Is the Divinity of Selassie a deliberately crafted Myth of God Incarnate, a Myth believed more with the heart than with the head? Does the Divinity of Selassie serve as a symbol of the Divinity of all men, or in this case the Divinity of the Black man? Only Rastas can answer that question.Erskine explores the history of Rasta and of the various Christian and quasi-Christian religious movements that have flourished in Jamaica over the years. He discusses their various beliefs, their outstanding personalities, and their role in the various rebellions and uprisings that have marked Jamaica's slow and erratic march towards justice and equality. He discusses the Rasta ethic of naturalness, the use of marijuana, the vegetarianism, the avoidance of alcohol, the "leaderlessness" of the movement, its attitude towards women, its music, and its suspicion of politics, ALL politics. Despite the political nature of much Reggae music, Rastas in general eschew politics and are therefore vulnerable to the critique that they are escapist and incapable of being agents of social change, despite their enormous influence in the popular culture of Jamaica and worldwide.This later point dominates much of the latter part of the book, and this includes a critique of Rasta "quietism." Much of the Rasta social critique sounds a lot like Marxism, but the heart of Rasta is far from the crude materialism and authoritarianism of orthodox Marxism. The challenge for Rasta is how to be socially engaged without adopting the more negative qualities of "Babylon" (mainstream Western society), and Erskine makes some tentative suggestions along these lines towards the end of the book.The Rasta religion and way of life is alternately charming, beautiful, menacing, and exasperating. If these various expressions can be harnessed in a productive manner that remains true to its roots, Rasta may one day be the force for real social change that it hopes to be.

Having read a couple of books on RastafarI, it shows that this one - originally written in 2004 - was written by an Afro-Jamaican for once, not an Anglo-Western. However, it also shows that it was not written by a RastafarI. To begin with, expressions (and lacking capital spellings of "-I") such as "Rastafarianism", "Rastafari belief and doctrine", "Rastafarian" and "Rastafari church" obviously demonstrate that the author, as an "expert", intended to distance himself from RastafarI, not respecting that some of these blunders most likely are insulting to RastafarI or at least incorrect. In fact, Noel Leo Erskine served as a pastor in a church.The wellcome part of the book is its embedment of RastafarI in the entire colonial religious-historical context (i.e. the religious liberation movements from the start of transatlantic Jamaican slavery leading up to RastafarI), including the neo-colonial economic power structures. The focus on Marcus Garvey is indeed dominating, also on Bob Marley. Which would not have been this intense with a Rasta author, who would have elaborated more on Leonard Percival Howell and Haile Selassie-I, both of whom of course are included in this book, yet rather marginally by comparison. Also the appreciation of RastafarI and the occasional statement that non-Rastas should learn one or the other thing from RastafarI is a positive facet of this book.To my amazement, on the other hand, the author seems to have missed a more thorough overstanding of RastafarI in quite a few instances. Though it is true that in the beginning Black RastafarI preferred a non-mingling attitude towards white skinned, ever sin-ce it isn't so much about the whiteness of the skin, which gets rejected, but the whiteness of the mind, which may inflict ANYONE. Of course, white skinned are more likely to get conditioned white, yet ALL of I-and-I (us) descent from Ethiopia. So, Rastas are cautious and embracing at the same time."Rastas refuse to cover their locks, while they insist on women wearing a covering" (p.111). Monolithic treatment of Rastas is always problematic. The author makes the above point also specifically for the Bobo Rastas. Which amazes me, as the Bobos (and some other Rastas) I know usually wear locks coverings in public, i.e. ALL of the I-n-I (them), irrespective of "gender". While in "orthodox" groups, the above quote rings true, most certainly this is not the case among modern Rastas, especially on a global scale. In fact, there are very much matriarchally inclined Rastas, especially in Africa and also some Rastas who do not believe anymore in the construct of gender-separation at all, i.e. overtaking the author in terms of "women's" liberation.Even though the author describes all the elements necessary to potentially overstand the concept of "I-n-I consciousness", he fails to fully succeed in it, e.g. when referring to it as "at its best is still steeped in individualism" (p.129). While the individual mind is most important for specific functions, individualism as such ("-ism" = belief in, doctrine of) is the diametrically opposed concept to "I-n-I".Initially, the return to Africa was intended quite literally. Reading this book, one gets the impression, the most important shift to metaphor never happened. Today, it is about the return to Ethiopia or rather "Ithiopia". Which may be described as an Ithiopian mind bubble anywhere in Babylon, irrespective of geographics. It is about turning Babylon into Ithiopia, at least for the Rasta living in Babylon. By the way, colonial induced systems in Africa may be Babylonian as sick. Some Rastas do not believe in the construct of continental separation anyway. (At this point, I would like to add that "Ethiopia" as a term for a country isn't that old. Previously, it was used as a synonym for Africa, something the author doesn't clarify in certain historical contexts. The country's previous names include Abyssinia and Axum.)So much for not quite overstanding Rasta concepts and/or neglecting the evolutionary processes of progressing concepts of various Rastas via reasonings. Which is a most important aspect of RastafarI in contrast to many other branches of religion, which instead are bound down by dogmas and hierarchy. The further one reads the book, the more critical the author gets. RastafarI are supposed to challenge each other; I-n-I most certainly challenge anybody else; I-n-I can take it to get challenged. I-n-I will not feel challenged all too much by this book, but rather criticized, which is a difference: I-n-I see that the author doesn't overstand yet some things, otherwise he wouldn't think, his criticisms are really challenging to RastafarI (who on purpose know better in these specific instances). In some of these cases, the author clearly crosses the line of acceptable attempts of challenges.Let's begin with the more harmless "challenges": The author claims RastafarI would approach colonial exploitation inadequately in order to change it. In context that almost sounds as if that prevailing situation of colonialism would be the Rastas' fault. I may remind that obviously, by that logic, EVERYBODY approaches that inadequately, including the author, as in the short term at least, nothing really changes. Later, he specifies his challenge that Rastas should participate in the creation and administration of laws in order to change things and to build the nation. He even goes on to aver, for the Rastas' failure to get involved in politics and the government, RastafarI would be an un-African religion.I will go into that briefly only: Nationalism is a construct. A quite recent one, by the way, only a few centuries old. Originating in Europe and the European-ruled Americas. Most certainly, it is not African. In fact, especially in Africa, those most artificial nations of them all are a major problem, not even mentioning that the nation construct is inherently most problematic anyway. The global ways of organizing government and the concept of political struggles (of parties, systems and other separations) are European failures. They are not traditional African ways of functioning democratic organizing ways. Please do not blame Rastas for the failure of those Babylon systems. These are not reformable in a sense of ever fully functioning. Feel free to listen to I-n-I thoughts and use them to translate them as band-aids for your systems. Life will get a bit better then, not more. Thanks for the invitation, but do not attempt to persuade I-n-I to engage in Babylon government politics.Most certainly I refuse to tolerate non-Rastas meddling in Rasta religion. The author criticizes Rastas for venerating a "foreign" God, an African God. Instead, I-n-I should venerate a Jamaican God. That is nationalism as bad as it gets. A god for every country?! That even means to leave monotheism. It means to sever from Africa. It means that Rastas would have INVENTED Haile Selassie-I as divine instead of SIGHTING H.I.M. as Jah, if it is suggestable that I-n-I should now arbitrarily pick another one from Jamaica. On what basis exactly? Dear Noel Leo Erskine, please feel free to do, what I-n-I can't stop you from, but leave I-n-I out of that! With that suggestion of yours you are not only blasphemous, but disrespectfull to I-n-I RastafarI, rendering I-n-I religion arbitrary, an illusion and thereby void. It also means to separate/splinter RastafarI, as in accordance with your suggestion, Rastas in all countries would venerate a different national god. By the way, your description of the Rasta concept of Jah is flawed anyway. There are variated concepts around, none really matching the author's words.The author falls for an inherent mistake: He's writing a book about a world religion, yet as if it was completely limited to Jamaica. That is utter non-sense on so many levels, I won't even begin here to elaborate on that. Also, it isn't as easy to write about RastafarI theology as it is with most other branches of religion, which have dogmas, hierarchies, maybe centralized power structures. RastafarI, even if looked at in the lacking Jamaican context only, is more like a tree with many branches. Monolithic descriptions, more or less applicable to other world religions (or their branches), simply distort any picture of RastafarI, even if written by an authentic Rasta. Do not forget that today more RastafarI live outside Jamaica than in Jamaica.The book provides for a lot of good information I appreciated. Yet, it doesn't overstand some issues. And it doesn't go as much into theology concepts of RastafarI - which would have to be variating - as I hoped, it would. All the criticism the author hurls at RastafarI are dealt with by various theological answers, having resulted from reasonings. Even their existance gets completely ignored in this book, only because they are not applied/known by all the branches of Rastas. In other words, for general information, especially the historic one, this book is worth to get read (including Rastas), even if you have read other books on RastafarI before. Non-Rastas should be carefull not to take anything in this book at face value.

Alas! A full length monograph on the theology of the only world religion having its genesis in the twentieth century. The writer of this important pioneering piece-Dr Leo Erskine-sees his work as a continuation of the earlier "Deconolizing Theology" in which themes of struggle and salvation are explored. From "Garvey to Marley" develops these motifs against the back drop of Rastafari reflection on bibliology, Christology and redemptive eschatology, with H.I.M. Haile Selassie as as the focal point. In reading this book, one could very easily get the impression that it was written by an insider. This is how much the author's 'Jamaicaness' and understanding of the movement dominate; and this is how much his empathy with the Rastafari agitation for liberation from "Babylon" shines through. My only disappointment is that the author did not interact with the programmatic work of Barbara Blake Hannah--the first Rasta to have put pen to paper on the movement. But otherwise Dr Erskine has done an excellent job in outlining the beliefs and praxis of Rastafari which have so far resisted any attempt at systematization. Erskine's latest book is a must read for all students and scholars of Contemporay Theology. It comes complete with a helpful glossary of Rastafarian terms.D V Palmer

Everybody seems to be writing series these days. It's a marketing thing I'm told.Scalzi is one is one of the best at it that I've seen since the 1950s and1960s (when I was a less sophisticated reader).His story and series arcs are coherent, plausible and intriguing with realistic, empathic characters. His thematic arcs teach very positive human values about family, loyalty, love, self-sacrifice and the power of individuals to change history.He avoids the trap of demonizing enemys. Most importantly he shows the the power of the merciful side of the warriors Ethos to end wars and avoid genocide. I believe that he rightfully ascribes that ethos to totally alien military leaders.In all Scalzi gives us a delightful space opera-ish tale that deftly critiques common human failures, the realistic limitations of the 'assumed' omniscience of powerful people, and the ability of 'ordinary' people, who dare to act, to avert apparently inevitable disaster.I highly recommend, and look forward to his future work.

Nice pivot in this third book away from the mostly military point of view, and toward the life of colonists. Of course, with John Perry and Jane Sagan, there are military intrigues and strategy to divine, but seeing them both settled and happy (about eight years out of the CDF) is a nice change of pace and gives them both fuller life. The book itself moves quickly, with some familiar characters returning and new characters (and species) introduced, more layers of the workings of the galaxy uncovered, and momentous decisions to be made. The book ends with some aspects enjoying closure, but a major cliffhanger (in the best sense). Curious where the series will end up, but Scalzi always makes the reader's journey enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed Old Man's War. Ghost Brigades was meh, just ok. This one was more like the former than the latter (and arguably better due to its great pacing at just over 300 pages - not much of which was filler). A great read that I couldn't put down.The characters were reasonably well realized (if not spectacular, at least not distracting). There weren't many obvious tropes.The whole premise was plausible and interesting. A microcosm of the world Scalzi created. His scifi universe comes with a fundamental realism that is totally believable.But it was the plot and intrigue that definitely carry the book. It's far from formulaic. Motivations make sense without being blatantly obvious or caricatures.The social and political undertones are also well done.A pleasure to read. I'll be reading everything by this author in time.

At the time this book was written, it was intended to be the 3rd book of a trilogy. Humans attempt to colonize a newly-discovered planet. What could go wrong?The book’s focus is not on the struggle to adapt to a new world; instead, its focus is on the effort to colonize a planet that multiple alien worlds may wish to have for themselves. But compared to the first two books, this book contained less soldierly-fighting and more inter-galactic intrigue (which I preferred). Indeed, I especially liked this book’s basic storyline. The plot made the phrase “do you know who your enemies really are?” come to mind. And, like the first two books in this series, the main characters were presented with intelligence and compassion.One oddity to the storytelling: The planet contained intelligent and organized beings, but they only appeared briefly within the story and then were never mentioned again. So they were just an interesting distraction that did not contribute to the basic storyline.Bottom line: Good plot; good characters; satisfying ending. Certainly better than your average sci-fi.

Funny how John Scalzi got into my reading list. Someone suggested The Forever War by Joe Haldeman so I bought it. Mr. Haldeman kindly inserted a letter he received from Mr. Scalzi into the front of the book. John Scalzi told a story about how people thought he ripped off The Forever War's theme and accused him of plagiarism. Anyway, that piqued me interest and I bought Old Man's War and loved it. He wrote several books after his success with Old Man's War and this is the third one out. Enjoyed it immensely and think you will too. Just read them in order.

The least impressive book of the series. I've read all of John Scalzi's books and this was the most disappointing book. It reminded me a lot of how the Enders game series went completely side ways.I enjoyed how the book gave the characters a view of the setting. the role of humanity in interstellar politics is interesting to read about, and I like the way challenges of the main characters, but the rising action is awful. Scalzi's spends probably a third of the book having the characters deal with a threat that is completely unrelated to anything, and doesn't have any major resolution. It was a frustrating read, and a disappointing sequel to one of the best SF series written in many years.

I always like Scalzi. This is a good book and a good ending to the first part of the series. The mediocre rating is because there is nothing spectacular or "must read" about it. The book was a fast, interesting, entertaining read. Perfect for the summer. My issues with the book numbered more than a few, but nothing major. It was a little episodic. I found John Perry to be a little too light for the situation. Too casual, good-natured and maybe even jovial, too Orphan Annie. I almost expected him to break out in song... "The sun will come out. Tomorrow..." His tone didn't fit the circumstances in the book. Also, the aliens (with the exception of the Obin) were too human in intentions, motivations and behaviors. The book is quite talky. Scalzi tells rather than shows. A step down from Ghost Brigades but an enjoyable read nonetheless.

Adult CCRN Review Book 20192. I would rate this book at a 5 of 5.3. The guide has great advice on test taking. The material is current and thorough. I like that it is broken up in sections with test questions following each section. I also really like the fact that it has rationale with each answer. It would have been nice to have had a DVD included with the book to take practice exams on my computer.

Not what I expected very basic information. I had another book years ago that was excellent. I thought this would have similar content. Not at all.

This book had very basic information that was much too easy for what you expect to see on the exam. This book was very cheap, but I'd recommend spending a little more money and going with another book.

It is very direct to the point, organized, illustrations are clear and easy to memorize... It is arranged system by system followed by a test. Most importantly is, it provides test taking strategy that serves as a motivation prior the main study guide starts. Best of all, it is not bulky, I can bring it while I travel.

Amazing! Inspiring! Has inspired me to do something with my "20 something" dreams ... which were 30 years ago ... but it's never too late to start! Although now I have a beautiful family who are growing up so fast, there is something missing in my life. Reading Adam's story has given me the push I needed to find my passion in life ... to sincerely help anyone that I can help. I am grateful that Adam has taken the time to write this amazing story on how he started PoP ... I truly felt like I was with him every step of the way. Great story teller! The Promise of a Pencil was actually a really incredible book to read. Adam Braun writes it in a way that really focuses on his development and his reactions or feelings in situations which helps you connect with him and his story. It is interesting because it follows the creation and development of his non-profit organization Pencils of Promise and gives great insight on how to build a successful non-profit and yet while you're reading you feel like you are reading a story. By that I mean- you feel like you are simply reading about Adam's life rather than a How-To. As I said The Promise of a Pencil gives great insight on how to build a successful non-profit because Adam Braun doesn't simply focus on his call to help people. He focuses on fundraising, building a board, making connections, etc- all of the business and finance things that are glossed over in other books that I have read. He really focuses on the reality of building a non-profit. I have only one negative thing to say about this book and it should definitely NOT stop anyone from buying this book but while reading this book I kept thinking to myself that he seemed extremely self-absorbed- the situations he was in were always about his thoughts, his feelings, his reaction and I kept wanting him to place himself in their shoes or comment on their pain. I kept reading and I am so glad that I did. I think it was written like this to show the massive changes that he undergoes and because this is a book about a guy who didn't ever think he would start a non-profit. It is about his story, his development into the man who created an incredible non-profit which makes education possible for even the most impoverished.Whether you want to open a non-profit yourself or you are just interested in philanthropy- this is a book I would recommend for everyone.

I recently attended a presentation by Adam Braun at my daughter's university in Walla Walla, Washington, and I tried so hard to hold back my tears of joy. I truly believe that it was providential for my daughter, Ivory Vogt, and I to finally meet him Adam Braun in person. For you see, my daughter started working last September to help put refugee children in Rwanda into schools in their country and around that same time I found Adam's book at the Seattle airport. Adam is a God-sent! I read his book "The Promise of a Pencil" while I was traveling halfway around the world from Seattle, Washington, all the way to Koror, Palau, and I found myself finishing the book within just hours. The book is well-written and it is full of wisdom and inspiration. I called my daughter, Ivory, via Skype from Taipei International Airport to share with her about how amazing and inspirational Adam Braun's book "The Promise of a Pencil" is and I encouraged her to get it right away and read it, then share the good news with all her friends around the world and also her colleagues at Walla Walla University. For young people especially, who are searching for purpose and meaning in life, Adam Braun's life story is a powerful testimony that when you follow your heart and allow the universe to speak to you through all of your keen observations and meaningful relationships with people you meet around the world - you can divinely find answers to your life's biggest questions. One person's ability to make a difference is what inspired me to read this book. Braun's memoir definitely demonstrates how one person's determination can make a difference in the global community. While some may debate whether Braun was an "ordinary person," this should not take away from the power of his story. Organized by mantras, Braun's narrative unfolds as he shares the lessons he learned along the way. The reader cannot help but be inspired by Brown's words and actions. Throughout his journey, Braun is goal-oriented, reflective, and genuine. He is definitely a person I would like to meet someday. Near the end of the book he states, "Purpose is found when you stop thinking about how you exist in the world and start trying to figure out why you are here. Once you solve that question, everything else will fall into place." Braun's narrative highlights how he found his purpose and made a difference.
