The Japanese version of the tales is a bit oddly worded, as if it was a haphazard translation from English, and not natural Japanese. There are also quite a few differences between the Japanese and the Engish text.I was planning to read the book to my kid in English and have my wife read the Japanese versions for him, but she decided to stick to "real" Japanese folktale books instead...
Stay away from Kindle edition: Inconvenient to read. Can't increase the font size sufficiently; with the bigger font can't read the lower part of the page - any attempt to scroll the page down brings the next page instead.Can't cancel the order after the purchase.To save yourself money and to prevent a disapointmens Stay Away.
I am actually a school student, but my school does not offer Japanese classes(BUMMER!!)So I decided to do some heavy self-studying instead! This book is pretty helpful!!!I am able to take my time understanding basic sentence structures in Japanese language and understand them first-hand in this book!Plus, I get to read a few folktale stories while I do so! :) Very cool!!
If you like Japanese culture, then these are great stories for kids. It's nice to know other cultures have similar stories to ours. One such story is that there is a rabbit in the moon rather than a man in the moon and after some explanation, I can "see" the rabbit in the moon as well as the man in the moon. Typical stories of explanations for cultural things, as are most folk tales.
I bought this for my grandchildren in Japan They speak both Japanese and English and are learning to read both languages I liked it so well I bought a second one for me as I am trying to learn Japanese and learn their culture
The book itself is very good quality with nice illustrations. Definitely recommend for beginners with hiragana/katagana knowledge and want to further their learning to kanji. A collection of good Japanese fairy tales.
I got this for my husband who is currently learning Japanese. Because it has the English and Japanese text together on the same page, it makes a great learning tool for someone who has learned their hiragana and katagana and is moving on to learning kanji and grammar. It provides the added cultural benefit of teaching classic Japanese stories to someone learning about the culture. The book itself is good quality, the illustrations are beautiful. Definitely recommended.
Do not buy the Kindle Edition. Unfortunately, the Japanese kanji is not rendered as characters, but as tiny graphical images which can't be properly enlarged or treated like regular text. I don't know why this decision was made, but it ruins the book as a bilingual resource, at least for me.
