Some months ago I read a review that said that this book was written for those with large flocks...not really practical for the backyard chicken owner. Because of that review I decided not to purchase the book. But when I saw it in my local library I checked it out.I started taking notes of things I wanted to remember. After having a full page of notes after just getting to page 64 I decided it would be worth it just to buy the book.I haven't come across any information yet that I don't feel is relevant to me (have only 6 chickens), but if and when I do, the overwhelming amount of very useful tips and techniques I've already taken from book will cause any superfluous information to be a minor point, not even worth considering.I highly recommend this book.

Very thorough! Covers the most important things you need to know about raising chickens from egg to putting meat on the table. (Unless you want to keep chickens solely as pets) I can see myself returning to this book to use for reference or sharing with friends! Covers things like breeds, bird size, egg size, how to start chicks and the times and seasons that are perfect for raising chickens and also goes over symptoms for illnesses, even in the end it shows how to process or dress your chickens for food! I feel like this book has everything a beginner like me would need.

My family and I have recently started raising chickens. I have been looking for a book for some time. Something with just the information we need. We just plan to have a small flock, of less than a dozen or so, to raise for eggs and meat. Most of the information in this book seems to be geared towards raising a small flock. There is some info about larger flocks. It is full of very useful information. It explains everything from how to heal wounded chickens yourself to how to select a chicken for butchering. It also has info on how to make your own feeders and waterers so that you don't have to purchase them. I was very impressed with this book and intend to purchase more of Storey's books as we decide to expand on our self sufficiency. Whether you're raising in your backyard or you have a barn and pasture, I recommend this book for anyone just starting out with chickens.

This is an awesome book. If you have ever had any questions, or have ever considered raising your own chickens, this is the book for you. We were "gifted" with 4 laying hens by a neighbor. I was raised on a farm, but I hadn't had my own chickens in more than 20 years, so I thought I could use a little professional help. That's exactly what I found when I opened the book. It is very well organized, the index is easy to navigate, so you don't spend a lot of time wandering aimlessly in an effort to find the answer to a specific issue. The book is full of good, useable information, and is an excellent reference tool for anyone, amateur, novice or possibly even the odd chicken whisperer.

I have a single chicken (‘Bertha’) that showed up one day a year or two ago. Her boyfriend (‘Rudy’) came first then she came a day later. She’s been around all this time. I needed to learn about chickens quickly and this book, along with other sources of reference, came in handy!

While it is geared towards a larger keepers. It still a good place to get information in regards to keeping chickens. For my self i am just starting with a few hens. the wife is already pushing for a rooster and expanding the flock.Read it with intention that if you intend to expand your flock. This book is for you. It does stay away from pushing the go all organic idea. For myself that just is not as practical idea as some might think. But I would urge you to buy and jeep it handy as it does contain knowledge you will find handy down the road.I do have this on my kindle, but am old fashion. The physical book allows me to walk out in to my back yard put it down with out worrying if moisture is about to destroy a $200+ USD piece of electronics.. LOL

I'm more than half way through this book and found it much better as an intro to Pandas than the two other books I began reading: "Pandas Cookbook" by Petrou and "Python for Data Analysis" by Wes McKinney (the creator of Pandas). Both of the latter are fine books but Chen's book is more concise: he explains a method, shows one or two good examples, then moves on. Perfect for the way I learn. (I have 14 years of Python experience.)

I liked Jared Lander's "R for Everyone", the earlier entry in Addison-Wesley's "Data & Analytics" series, so I was looking forward to "Pandas for Everyone" - and mentioned it in my November 2017 review of "Pandas Cookbook" by Ted Petrou, as a just-around-the-corner alternative to wait for. Privately, I wondered if "Pandas Cookbook", a very decent book, was going to be completely eclipsed by "Pandas for Everyone" after just one month on the market.Now, I don’t think that is going to happen. Between the two titles - and the two, along with (of course) Wes McKinney's "Python for Data Analysis", are, in my opinion, the only Pandas titles worth considering - I prefer Petrou's, as a book with more substance and clarity. By all means, "Pandas for Everyone" is a good, original book, but one that is visibly under-edited, which makes its presentation less effective than it could be. There is less Pandas in it than in "Pandas Cookbook" - on the other hand (and this may be a plus for many readers), a couple of chapters are given to illustrations of statistical and machine-learning algorithms. (Applied to Pandas dataframes - that's the Pandas connection).My advice to a Pandas learner would be to get "Pandas Cookbook", "Pandas for Everyone", and "Python for Data Analysis", see whose style you prefer, and leave 1-2 books for further study.

In contrast, Pandas for Everyone opens with an extended discussion of the steps involved with reading in and manipulating data. For the most part, chapters are bite sized and self contained. However, the examples are basic and I had to supplement this book with Wes Mckinney's "Python for Data Analysis: Data Wrangling with Pandas, NumPy, and IPython" and Jake Vanderplas "Python Data Science Handbook" in order to fully understand what was going on under the hood.

The author has a very well organized way to present the concepts of data analysis (i.e. the what) and the tools (i.e. the how to part) without aiming to high in the complexity not boring the reader with the basics of python as many other books about Pandas.Best book in the market bridging the gap between basics and intermediate levels. Very practical, concise, and very engaging reading experience.

Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen has been a children's librarian for more than 25 years, and has worked in public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries, non-profit libraries, children's museums, preschools, home-daycares and more. About the Author

Jason Lauré moved to San Francisco in the famous "Summer of Love" and started photographing the counterculture. He attended Columbia University and worked at the New York Times before serving in the United States Army in France, where he attended the Sorbonne. He was a finalist for a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for his work in Bangladesh. His photographs have been auctioned at Sotheby's and featured at the Hard Rock Cafe and at the Bethel Woods Museum. Jason lives in Cape Town, South Africa and in New York City.Ettagale Blauer is a full-time writer with expertise in Africa, diamonds, fine jewelry, and design. She is the author of several books, including African Elegance and a series on African countries. One of the books she coauthored with Jason Lauré, Joi Bangla!: The Children of Bangladesh, was a National Book Award finalist. Her work has appeared in several magazines including Rapaport and Art & Auction, and she has lectured at New York University and led wildlife and gem safaris in Africa. Ettagale lives in New York City.

I had prepared myself for it to be in black and white. Sigh! Woodstock in my mind is in vivid color. But more than that this was a poor book to tell about Woodstock. I was not there, I was in Indiana but I remember the kooky news reports about it. I have also played my Woodstock album innumerable times! The album is in color and has many great pictures. This book captured none of the essence of the happening for me. Besides that a good portion of the pictures were taken at other performances not a Woodstock. I also craved more in depth information on the bands and individual performances but the information here is disappointingly short and breezy, I will hold on to my album for life but this book.

I received a paperback ARC with black & white photos. There are grammatical and editorial errors throughout which I feel sure will be properly corrected in the published edition. Therefore these did not have any bearing on my opinion.From the title and description of this book, I expected to receive a "coffee table" worthy book, where the photos are the star and the narrative tells of events leading up to and ending at Woodstock. Followed by a hefty chunk about the "lasting effects" of the counterculture. Instead it's a disorganized hop-scotch thru history, seeming to randomly include and omit information. (Like including Tina Turners abusive marriage and omitting The Manson Family murders...What?) The lack contextual flow left me confused at times. For example: speaking of heros being gone, never having identified who he was referencing, and searching for the pictures I was reading about. In one instance the description and photo were 3 pages apart.There are a lot of opinions crammed into the narrative - like feminism, individualism, Viet Nam, communes, protesting, riots, etc. But they are not given the space necessary for such topics. From the tragedies of the early 60's, 67's Summer of Love, all the way through the iconic gathering of some 400,000 people on Max Yasgur's dairy farm. All has had a lasting effect on our culture. I expected to read about that here. Sadly, it was basic info that fails to deliver a meaningful walk through an era that's unforgettable. . . Even for those of us who weren't even born yet.If you love everything Woodstock, I would add this book (in hardback) to my collection. If for no other reason than these are actual photos snapped by Jason Laure nearly 50 years ago!. If you're not ga-ga over this event I would wait for a sale or check it out from local library first.

I was there! The advance readers copy I received contained only Black and White photos, which does a disservice to the final product. I've seen the Color version of many of these photos in the past . As a coffee table photography book it will probably rate five stars in it's finished form.The text however, left me wanting more, or in some cases maybe less.Not sure why abused wife Tina Turner photos are included. She opened for the Rolling Stones on tour ,but ,was not at either Woodstock or at the anti-Woodstock Altamont which the Rolling Stones headlined. Or for that matter why in addition include Nina Simone and Bob Dylan in the Greenwich Village section and fail to include Judy Garland's death in the brief section on the Stonewall Riots. Hopefully the text is still under revision. As it is it's far from a definitive look at the" The Lasting Impact of the Counterculture ". Personally I found much of the impact in hibernation since Richard Nixon destroyed the peoples faith in the America . Sadly it's taken High School shootings and another unfit President to revitalize it. The Student Strikers of today, the Women's Marchers, etc have picked up the mantle of the counterculture. It's been a long time coming..

I have been drawn to the 1969 Woodstock event for decades and have an extensive collection of books detailing the concert. With the 50th anniversary of Woodstock approaching, I was hoping this volume would serve as a proper commemoration of the concert and provide something new and unique. Instead, WOODSTOCK 1969 offers nothing more than a rather limited quick-take of the concert and cherry-picked overview on the “impact” of the Counterculture. Albeit, there are some nice (new … to me, at least) photographs of the concert, the textual content of the book is rather elementary. The book would have been better, in my opinion, if it was presented simply as a collection of Lauré’s photographs with brief explanations of the photos and nothing more.Jason Lauré, a photo-journalist, was present at the heart of some seminal events of the late sixties, including the Woodstock Festival. This book includes numerous photos taken during this time and some are quite impressive, especially those he took at the concert … again, many I have never seen before. My problems with the book stem from its overall presentation and commentary. The full title of the book includes “the Lasting Impact of the Counterculture” appearing as a footnote to the colorful, oversized graphic of “WOODSTOCK 1969”. While the middle of the book focuses on Woodstock, it only represents a rather small portion of the whole book. In other words, it’s a book on the Counterculture with a section devoted to the concert. Additionally, the authors chose to selectively glorify events of the time … we never get the full picture of events.WOODSTOCK 1969 starts with the roots of the Counterculture: the “Summer of Love” in 1967. This period is presented quite generously as the peaceful hippie gatherings in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district where people “peacefully” “dropped-out and tuned-in” amid a sea of drugs and iconic music. We get the sanitized version of this period and it comes across as quite appealing. Numerous other books detailing the Summer of Love reveal how even those partaking in the Counterculture movement were not immune to greed and criminal intent, not to mention how brief that “Summer of Love” truly was. It is a celebration of everything the hippie generation wanted you to believe it to be: a glorious moment in time.The section on Woodstock is rather basic and focuses only on the photos taken by Lauré … it does not cover the full concert. We are not offered anything to put the photos in context, only pictures of certain performers in the middle of the concert and some simple commentary. While I think the photos are good, readers are given nothing that really defines the historic nature of the event and I found this tremendously disappointing. Considering the attention-grabbing title of this book, I was expecting much more on the concert itself. Even the commentary accompanying the photos are bland. It would have been nice to hear the photographer’s description of events while the photos were taken … something unique and insightful. While I am somewhat well-read about Woodstock, those who are not will not get anything informative from this book, other than some pictures. There is no account of the festival’s beginning (Richie Havens), its end (Jimi Hendrix) or much of the interesting stuff in-between. Just pictures here and there. Woodstock is iconic in that it happened by accident … it was a disaster that yielded a positive outcome and it can NEVER be replicated. While I feel this event deserves to be recognized, it is important to realize the Woodstock as we know it to be was not planned to happen the way it did. I felt this book could-have and should-have offered more to explain the concert’s unique place in history.The end of the book picks up where the book started (Woodstock seems to be a diversion) by glorifying the “lasting impact” of the Counterculture. While one cannot deny the late sixties representing the onset of speaking up (individually and collectively), not all of it was/is good. The same environment that spawned Woodstock also spawned iconic notoriety: Charles Manson and the Altamont Festival (“Woodstock West”).I don’t feel WOODSTOCK 1969 delivers what it promises. Basically, we get a book of photos with basic commentary covering a selective range of events. It is a simple book of photographs that is presented as more.
