Everybody seems to be writing series these days. It's a marketing thing I'm told.Scalzi is one is one of the best at it that I've seen since the 1950s and1960s (when I was a less sophisticated reader).His story and series arcs are coherent, plausible and intriguing with realistic, empathic characters. His thematic arcs teach very positive human values about family, loyalty, love, self-sacrifice and the power of individuals to change history.He avoids the trap of demonizing enemys. Most importantly he shows the the power of the merciful side of the warriors Ethos to end wars and avoid genocide. I believe that he rightfully ascribes that ethos to totally alien military leaders.In all Scalzi gives us a delightful space opera-ish tale that deftly critiques common human failures, the realistic limitations of the 'assumed' omniscience of powerful people, and the ability of 'ordinary' people, who dare to act, to avert apparently inevitable disaster.I highly recommend, and look forward to his future work.
Nice pivot in this third book away from the mostly military point of view, and toward the life of colonists. Of course, with John Perry and Jane Sagan, there are military intrigues and strategy to divine, but seeing them both settled and happy (about eight years out of the CDF) is a nice change of pace and gives them both fuller life. The book itself moves quickly, with some familiar characters returning and new characters (and species) introduced, more layers of the workings of the galaxy uncovered, and momentous decisions to be made. The book ends with some aspects enjoying closure, but a major cliffhanger (in the best sense). Curious where the series will end up, but Scalzi always makes the reader's journey enjoyable.
I thoroughly enjoyed Old Man's War. Ghost Brigades was meh, just ok. This one was more like the former than the latter (and arguably better due to its great pacing at just over 300 pages - not much of which was filler). A great read that I couldn't put down.The characters were reasonably well realized (if not spectacular, at least not distracting). There weren't many obvious tropes.The whole premise was plausible and interesting. A microcosm of the world Scalzi created. His scifi universe comes with a fundamental realism that is totally believable.But it was the plot and intrigue that definitely carry the book. It's far from formulaic. Motivations make sense without being blatantly obvious or caricatures.The social and political undertones are also well done.A pleasure to read. I'll be reading everything by this author in time.
At the time this book was written, it was intended to be the 3rd book of a trilogy. Humans attempt to colonize a newly-discovered planet. What could go wrong?The book’s focus is not on the struggle to adapt to a new world; instead, its focus is on the effort to colonize a planet that multiple alien worlds may wish to have for themselves. But compared to the first two books, this book contained less soldierly-fighting and more inter-galactic intrigue (which I preferred). Indeed, I especially liked this book’s basic storyline. The plot made the phrase “do you know who your enemies really are?†come to mind. And, like the first two books in this series, the main characters were presented with intelligence and compassion.One oddity to the storytelling: The planet contained intelligent and organized beings, but they only appeared briefly within the story and then were never mentioned again. So they were just an interesting distraction that did not contribute to the basic storyline.Bottom line: Good plot; good characters; satisfying ending. Certainly better than your average sci-fi.
Funny how John Scalzi got into my reading list. Someone suggested The Forever War by Joe Haldeman so I bought it. Mr. Haldeman kindly inserted a letter he received from Mr. Scalzi into the front of the book. John Scalzi told a story about how people thought he ripped off The Forever War's theme and accused him of plagiarism. Anyway, that piqued me interest and I bought Old Man's War and loved it. He wrote several books after his success with Old Man's War and this is the third one out. Enjoyed it immensely and think you will too. Just read them in order.
The least impressive book of the series. I've read all of John Scalzi's books and this was the most disappointing book. It reminded me a lot of how the Enders game series went completely side ways.I enjoyed how the book gave the characters a view of the setting. the role of humanity in interstellar politics is interesting to read about, and I like the way challenges of the main characters, but the rising action is awful. Scalzi's spends probably a third of the book having the characters deal with a threat that is completely unrelated to anything, and doesn't have any major resolution. It was a frustrating read, and a disappointing sequel to one of the best SF series written in many years.
I always like Scalzi. This is a good book and a good ending to the first part of the series. The mediocre rating is because there is nothing spectacular or "must read" about it. The book was a fast, interesting, entertaining read. Perfect for the summer. My issues with the book numbered more than a few, but nothing major. It was a little episodic. I found John Perry to be a little too light for the situation. Too casual, good-natured and maybe even jovial, too Orphan Annie. I almost expected him to break out in song... "The sun will come out. Tomorrow..." His tone didn't fit the circumstances in the book. Also, the aliens (with the exception of the Obin) were too human in intentions, motivations and behaviors. The book is quite talky. Scalzi tells rather than shows. A step down from Ghost Brigades but an enjoyable read nonetheless.
