However, a key worker is missing: "The fire alarm is ringing! The fire truck needs to go. But where did the firefighter who drives the truck go?" Open the door, and thus intrude upon the missing adult who has just recently used, or in some cases still is sitting on, the toilet. Readers visit the police station, construction site, doctor's office, baseball field, zoo, and more to discover again and again that important people are in the restroom. The bright, glossy cartoon drawings contain small details (the astronaut has toilet paper stuck to his space boot and the train engineer has train cars on his boxer shorts) that add to the goofiness and help relieve tension for a topic that can be embarrassing. Great if you want to teach your children gender and racial biases. This is not a book that I would buy again. Where are the female doctors? Why are the brown and black people athletes and service people?
I thought this book would be a great tool for my firetruck loving toddler and while yes, he enjoys lifting the flaps I find the book full of misogyny and stereotypes.
I wrote this twice and it keeps erasing it. I'll just show you pictures. We love it, it's a great addition to the potty training library! Careers: fireman, policeman, baseball player, foreman (construction), doctor, astronaut, waiter, pilot, train engineer, zookeeper.
I experienced a regression problem with my son complaining when remined to go potty or trying to hold it in too long and having accidents. Books are an invaluable teaching resource for him as he LOVES books and being read to; so I thought buying this book might help our situation and it absolutely did. He LOVES this book and after recieving it we stopped having the problem. Every once in a while he might complain when I remind him to potty, at which point I remind him, "even fire fighters go potty" and he stops complaining and goes potty. Perfect!!!! As a frquent reminder we often read this to him before bed at night.
Great book for little boys (or girls) who are potty training. This worked for us because my son is OBSESSED with firefighters - so after reading this book, he was 100% potty trained. No joke! If you have a kid in the midst of potty training, who loves firetrucks, firefighters etc. GET THIS BOOK. It also has other professions (teacher, doctor, train conductor etc. within the story - all using the potty) Cute illustrations, short enough to satisfy the attention span of a 2-3 year old. Colorful illustrations. To the point without a ton of extra junk - so the concept of going potty on the toilet is always in their minds.
I admit, when we first received this book I wasn't sure what to think of it. The pictures are a little off-putting, to see firemen and construction workers in the bathroom. But it is absolutely my son's favorite. He has an older sister, so we had some "girl" potty books, and gender-neutral ones, and he instantly gravitated to this one because he loves firefighters, police officers, trains, planes, etc. Yes, it may be a little sexist, but not worse than many other potty or preschool book. I think one reason he loves it is that its fun and DIFFERENT. We've owned or read several potty books, and for the most part the others are all pretty much the same --- with the story line of: the baby starts out in diapers, he/she receives a new potty, is suspicious but tries it, and eventually success. This one is totally different and fun. No real story line like mentioned before, just says that all these cool figures that your little boy may love (i.e. the firefighter, the zookeeper, the baseball player) all use the potty too, so don't you want to use the potty like them? Yes, a little goofy, but fun. Very happy with our purchase. You may not want this to be your ONLY potty book for your little boy, but this is certainly a nice addition to add into the mix.
My toddler likes this book and I purchased it as well as some other potty books because we are having a little shame about the potty. The main problem I have with the book is the blatant sexism. There are 10 people that use the potty and only 1 is a female. Some of the scenes show other professionals in addition to the one using the potty. None of them are female. I know it is a seemingly small thing, but it is clearly showing kids that males are the professionals. Even the polar bear is a male. The pages are nicely laminated, so can be wiped clean if you read this in the potty. The flaps are high quality. I am just disappointed they couldn't have thrown in just a few more women to be a more well rounded book.
With A Potty for Me! already in the house and a regular favorite of our 22-month old, I picked up "Even Firefighters go to the Potty" along with two other Amazon favorites, Where's the Poop? and Everyone Poops. My intention was to do a comparison review of the four books based on our boy's reaction and preference to all four, but there's a problem. Given the chance -- and literally, I mean every night and on those mornings we read, for the past 30 days -- each and every opportunity he grabs these three most recent potty books. (Alas, 'Potty for Me' gets left behind -- as do the other 20 books in his library.) Sneak another book in? He usually pushes it aside.The three books are very different, but 'Even Firefighters...' is my (our?) favorite for a couple of reasons.It's a well constructed and durable book. The pages are heavy, and the unfolding "door" on each page is simply the end of the page folded over; it's not a glued on flap as is used in 'Potty for Me' and 'Where's the Poop.'The pictures on each page are colorful and detailed, so we can talk about everyday objects such as phones and ladders and the locomotive engines on the train engineer's underpants, and also colors and numbers. That alone gives this book longer legs than the others.Particularly fun is that we've taught our son to knock on a closed door, so he's quick to knock on the bathroom door on every page and await my "Come in!" reply before opening. That's always worth a few giggles.As far as he's concerned, all three of the new Potty books are equal hits, but as far as keeping his parents interested and engaged, my wife and I both have a preference for this (though we both yearn for him to once again bring us Little Blue Truck to send him off to slumberland).
