My paychecks can only allow me one option; either I buy multiple inexpensive (price wise) items or I buy a few pricey items every 3 months.One good thing to know from this book is that the small scale designers who manufacture items in USA are not charging so much $ because they are greedy. The cost of bringing out those pieces domestically is enough to justify the asking (plus they have to eat, too).2nd good thing is that I feel slightly better that I only shop at TJMaxx and Urban Outfitters. I don't shop Forever21, H&M, Walmart, Kmart, Target, Gap, Zara (once every 3 years), Old Navy (once every 5 years), Ross, Marshalls, Macy's, Express, JCrew/Madewell, Nordstrom Rack. In a very small way I feel comforted by patronizing just 2 stores (smaller carbon foot print perhaps).3rd good thing: I don't buy multiples in dif. colors just because an item is inexpensive.*** RESOLUTION:I am going to ponder and analyze more about my shopping habit. At my age (almost 50), maybe it is time to zero in on quality and less is more than to have a bursting closet.Too many choices is not a good thing at all. Things don't get used and loved because there are too many.

It is a shocker. We the consumers are responsible for the decline. Why? Because we want current fashion at a cheap price, and merchandisers have figured out how to give it to us. But if you are a savvy shopper who heads to a thrift shop or consignment shop to buy better quality at equally low prices, beware! As cheap clothes flood the market, more and more are finding their way into second hand stores. Soon quality clothes will go the way of clunky TV and computer monitors and dial-up telephones. And it's not all about "Made in China." The book is an easy read, but packed with information. The author appears to have done her homework. I gave it four stars because I think it's an important book -- didn't give it five because it xould have used some tighter editing. For the record, I seldom give 5 stars!

For most of my life, I've followed my mother's advice and paid a bit more for high-quality, timeless clothes. However, over the past few years I have been sucked into cheap fast-fashion and added a few knock-offs to my closet that often don't make it past the second washing. Ms. Cline raises the curtain on the ugly fast-fashion industry and reminds us to be more thoughtful when purchasing clothes and accessories. She inspires us to be more thoughtful in our purchases and to be cognizant of whose hands are creating the pieces we put on our backs.I am now back to my old-fashioned (much more honorable) habit of consistently inspecting seams and hems for proper construction and looking for the "made in..." label. If we refuse to buy items created in sweatshops, our actions could lead to better working conditions throughout the world.

So I chose to make a difference in my world. I chose to be a more conscientious consumer. I chose to return to making my own clothes.

“1491” is Charles Mann’s synthesis of much of what is known today about Native Americans. I learned much from this book. It corrects the falsehoods that I learned in school – that the Native Americans crossed the Bering Strait about 10 to 15 million years ago, that they numbered in the low millions, and most importantly that they did not create significant institutions or have a transformative influence on the environment. The book is well-written and enjoyable to read from cover to cover, an interesting mix of journalism, travel writing, archaeology and history. I found the appendices about the Mayan calendar and the syphilis debate to be informative. I will mention that I enjoyed Mann’s companion book “1493” more than this one; that book focuses specifically on the Columbian Exchange and the new globalized world that followed Columbus’s discovery of the Americas. Each book is independent and covers a different topic and they do not need to be read sequentially. Both books are worthwhile and interesting.

I'm only 70 percent of the way through this book, but I am totally captivated. The information is so dense and stereotype-busting thaI have to put the book down every now and then and think about what I've just read. It's that groundbreaking, especially when it spells out how the Amazonians actually created the ground they walked, planted and lived on. Try to put that in your head! You'll find out how they planted more food than they could have ever eaten, although they had no farms. The most amazing thing I have discovered is just how many organized civilizations there were before the Spaniards arrived, instead of the ignorant and unorganized, nomadic natives we have been led to believe existed. One of these Mesoamerican civilizations discovered the concept of Zero before the Arabs did, who were half a world away and thought to have been the first to have Zero in their mathematics, All of this information is based in recent and ongoing archeological discoveries of the last 200 years. I read 1493 a couple of years ago (twice) and was similarly overwhelmed by the amount of new information. When I began reading 1491, I thought there was no way that it could match the amount of dramatic historical information I found in 1493. I was wrong. This is also a book with so much information that I will have to read it a couple more times, at least, to absorb it all. Enjoy!

Solid writing, fun to read, thought provoking and despite events from 500 years ago, the topics are contemporary. I'm using the same review for 1491 and 1493. Read both. I had two 11 hour flights, two weeks apart. I read 1491 on the first trip, 1493 on the second. (I'm reading "The Wizard and the Prophet" now, and I feel like these three books are a trilogy.)

So enjoyed 1491 - What an eye opener as to the reality of the Americas prior to the arrival of Columbus (Colon) and company! Such a rich & diverse number of Indian populations living and thriving for hundreds of years! Organized, largely populated cities existed, 50,000 + inhabitants. Doing all the warring with other Indian Nations, struggling within for control, evolving from hunter gathers to farmers (Large farms), trading up and down the river ways and shore lines. Life was vibrant and growing, just like in Europe. Information that was just brushed by, if even mentioned in history classes, even in college!If you enjoy learning, Mr Mann presents his well researched, well documented and very laymen friendly style delivery for an excellent window revealing more than I dreamed of (suspected existed) into lives that existed in the Americas prior to the arrival of the Europeans! Already have begun 1493!

I’ve read every book on the subject from Sapiens to Guns, Germs & Steel and this is by far the best. Not only is the writing clear and convincing but his information is incredibly thorough, without ego, and is backed up by extremely thorough research. One “problem” with some of these other books can be that most of the conclusions seem to come from the authors with select research added to back up their perspectives. In the case of this book the research drives the conclusions and not the author. Nothing is presented without a very detailed analysis of a cross-section of many other people’s findings and conclusions which are often compared and analysed as well.

I bought this book after reading James Lowen's "Lies My Teacher Told Me" and wanting to know more about indigenous American history. What a truly fascinating and enlightening read - and so tragic. Something like this really should be required reading for students as it gives one a very different perspective on what was lost during the European conquest of the Americas and all the ways that European and African cultures benefitted from the scientific and organizational accomplishments of native American societies. Our very model of democracy, so often attributed to the Greeks, was hugely influenced by what existed in some native societies. This book also helps disabuse you of the notion that European conquest was ever a foregone conclusion - there were millions of people here in thick prosperous settlements, capable of waging very deadly war. Were it not for disease (and its effects illustrated so well here), it's unlikely Europeans would have ever been successful in the Americas nor would they have had the wealth to be able to so fully dominate other parts of the world. So much great stuff here - I'll probably have to read it again one day. I highly recommend for anyone interested in the history of the world.

Absolutely the best book I've read on the history of the Americas before the European invasions. I'm not going to write more; I have been profoundly moved by the book, but my experience might be quite different from that of another reader.

Read this a few times in the past to keep my mind sharp when it comes to programming and algorithms. I believe this is one of the standard books to review when it comes to “programming interview prep”.I found the chapters on Linked Lists (ch 4), Graphs (ch 5), Strings (ch 6) and Recursion (ch 7) to be the most useful.The explanations provided in the book was good, but I wouldn’t use it as a pure substitute for learning data structures. I prefer textbooks for that.The exercises however, are the meat of this book. Each of the questions presented are very practical and are pretty close to what you would be asked in an interview. I’d say if you want to really prepare for your typical programming interview, definitely pick this books up.It’s also pretty useful for a quick read for a review of data structures and basic algorithmic concepts if you find that you were very comfortable with theoretical CS in the past and and just want to brush up in a practical sense.Highly recommended buy. I have already read this book 3 or 4 times already in the past 6 years or so. :)

i liked the questions and explanations more in this than in Cracking the Coding Interview. Definitely a little on the easy side but I got an exact question from this in an interview once

A couple years ago, I made an extremely difficult choice. Which interview prep book should I buy? - Cracking the coding interview or Programming Interviews Exposed. I settled and bought both.What is this book good at?Teaching you the fundamentals like you know nothing. This book is like a super condensed version of any algorithms and data structures textbook that reminds you of everything you've learnt (perhaps forgotten) in school.What is it not?Although this book does have some interesting problems to solve, the focus is to get your basics in place rather than have you practise a bunch of problems(which is more the approach of Cracking the Coding Interview). It does not necessarily teach you how to be a good interviewee but rather teaches you how to be a good programmer.This book is great for a person who's lost touch with the basics or just needs a refresher of sorts. It is also good for students to help them understand what parts of their textbooks are most important in terms of interviews. Although, if you are a student, I suggest you pair this book with Craking the Coding interview for your interview prep since that book trains you more practically while this book gives you a strong sense theoretically.

Great review on fundamentals. It doesn't have many sample interview questions. But if there are any you do not understand in here, you know which algorithms/datastructures you should probably brush up on in case they are needed in interviews.I don't think this has anything on hashing and hashtables. It seems to have everything else I remember from algorithms/datastructure courses I once took.

Awesome book. It is clearly tailored to those who have already studied CS extensively. Other books I've tried have wasted my time explaining simple concepts, but this book gets right to business.

Excellent book for studying for job interviews in the software development business.It covers most important areas that are asked in job interviews.And each chapter comes both with explanations and example questions.If you know how to solve any questions in this book - you're definitely getting almost any job you apply to.

Love this book for interview prep. I have both this one and the 'Cracking the Coding Interview' and I think I slightly lean in favor of this one. The other book has more problems, with in depth solutions, but I like the topic coverage of this book. I think all concepts are explained very well. I hate coding interviews, and have issues with nerves that make it very challenging for me to think in that kind of setting. The only way to combat that is to practice and be confident in your knowledge. This book certainly will help in the later. I highly recommend having both books, but if you are only going to go with one I would make this one it.

Extremely helpful to anyone studying for Computer Science interviews. It covers a lot of the topics in-depth, unlike Cracking the Coding Interview which assumes you have a strong understanding of everything talked about in the book, which really helps in understanding what is going on.
