I think the narrative format originally deployed in The Goal has been overextended here. Once you understand the heavyweight ideas of TOC, you're ready to accept new ideas in a more condensed format, such as in The Race. This book felt like a short commentary on some of the technological implications of TOC, embedded in a rather boring story short on details. I'm also afraid that technology has evolved much faster and farther in the years since publication, with far greater implications than anyone would have guessed. Technology may still be necessary but not sufficient, but increasingly it is changing the rules, not just operating within them.

To say that there's nothing of value here is incorrect. True, it helps to have read The Goal. Not only is an explanation of drum-buffer-rope needed, so is a definition of Murphy. No doubt this alienates the uninitiated, as might the book's meandering plot. However, there are a few ideas here that are pure gold.One such idea is that using technology to add value by increasing capacity only improves net income when overhead is cut. I have personally seen ERP value proposition spreadsheets that haphazardly combine income statement and capacity improvements to arrive at a total "value created" number for the client. Capacity improvements are a means to value creation, not an end. Technology firms that misunderstand this will have problems cost justifying their solutions to their clients. They should read this book.Another golden idea is that technology deployment is only one part of the business improvement process. The other (perhaps more important) part of the process comes from changing the success metrics surrounding the area that deploys the technology. For example, if Tyson pays its plant managers to maximize efficiencies, it's natural that they will increase the chicken supply regardless of expected demand, burning cash in the process. Accordingly, technology driven capacity increases will drive up finished goods inventories unless firms change the way they reward their plant managers.This book has bold implications for CPFR software users. How likely is it that plant managers at the top of the supply-chain will do what's in the best interest of the entire supply-chain if doing so makes them look like they are doing a poor job? Not many. And what if the members of a given supply-chain are different companies, with different lending ratios, stock prices, industry benchmarks, and so on? And whose customer is the end-user anyway? Thought provoking.If anything, the book educates supply-chain students that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Sure it's fun to think theoretically about supply-chain management, but the real world is a cruel mistress. This book reminds us that if CPFR and ERP were such a great ideas, then there would be no unprofitable vertically integrated companies. Reason enough to buy the book.

Goldratt is over rated, somehow he turned a simple graph theorem in to a management industry.

The Goal set a super high standard, perhaps. This book is a similar story style, but just doesn't convey nearly as much valuable information as The Goal. If you like Goldratt's book, I would say this is a "necessary" read, but its surely "not sufficient."

You can get most of the same material by listening to Beyond The Goal, but I found this to be excellent reinforcement of the ideas and somewhat more detailed. The writing was more hurried than other books by Dr Goldratt. It is still just as effective as the others.

Although fictional, the life cycle of the process of discovering the gap between perceived and actual value was excellent. Highly recommended reading

After reading the "Goal","Its not Luck" and "Critical Chain", this was sort of a let down.This book makes some good points, like on focussing at what isuues the technology should resolve. But there aren't as many thought-provoking or "ah-ha" moments as in the other books.I also felt that there was a lot of unnecessary ToC promotion in this book.All in all, read the other books. Read this one if you have time.

A brilliantly written novel that does, for an entire supply chain, what The Goal did for production. It explains clearly the need for a holistic approach that embraces the I.T. function. The book has an excellent example of how addressing a constraint in one area (production) unavoidably leads to disaster in the distribution channel.This book gives I.T. professionals and anyone wondering about the value of their computer systems an incredible business education in a fast-paced 4 hour read. Not only does it do a brilliant job of explaining the problems, but it even gives tangible solutions.

This book provides a relatively sympathetic portrait of Hughes that heavily emphasizes his personal life versus his business dealings. The book appears to have been well researched and provides a startling new (at least for me) explanation of Hughes' mental breakdown during his middle and later years. I liked this book because it maintained its focus on the man rather than getting mired with his business transactions, the myriad of business associates, etc. You get a more 3-dimensional picture of his personality/character rather than the usual depictions of him just being a crazed, ruthless man.

Being interested in this fella and reading books from the 70`s on came across this one and bought it as the local library had lost it's one copy. After reading it came away with a slightly different take on Mr Huges but got the feeling reading this take on the man that although the authors did an exhaustive job researching the subject too much was made about the female aspect (which wouldn't us guys love to be able to do) but they made up for it showing how the 'Mormon Connection' robbed the guy blind to the tune of billions the whole time covering their tracks by all means available. Which by the way should be a book on it's own.Here's a guy thinking these righteous religious christian zealots would protect his interests and do what's best an do the right thing while the whole time they were just worming their way into his fortune an sealing off all outsiders....what a shame. But his (Huges) paranoia sealed his own fate.Walked away from this book thoroughly disgusted with those people and left with that age old feeling that greed knows no bounds.

After watching The Aviator I wanted to know more about Hughes and this seemed to be the most reputable volume. Very well written and researched, this bio tells you all you need to know about the man and the truth and the details are much more outlandish than even Hollywood can portray. All areas of Hughes’s life are examined in detail but the focus here leans more toward his mental/emotional problems and his pathological womanizing. Hughes remains one of the most fascinating and brilliant figures of the 20th Century but by the end of the book I grew weary of the minutiae of his madness and ended up glossing over many sections which became increasingly depressing variations on a theme: A fearless innovator and adventurer whose wild excesses were unrestrained by financial limits but who was imprisoned, crippled, and ultimately destroyed by physical and mental illness. Readers looking for sensational voyeurism will likely be more satisfied than history buffs.KINDLE READERS: This edition has an awkward font that can't be changed and creates occasional display errors. No "time left" shown for chapters and individual chapters can only be accessed through hotlinks in the Table of Contents instead of the Go To menu. Pretty lame, considering the above average price.

If you’re looking for Howard the Business Man, keep looking. You won’t find an exhaustive analysis of Hughes’ financial ventures here, nor does this work detail Howard the Aviator (Charles Barton’s Howard and his Flying Boat is currently the single best work available on Howard’s aviation achievements). Sure the book does cover these areas, as it follows the full sweep of the man’s near-mythical life—from his restrictive rearing by a hypochondriacal mother, to his stunningly inglorious demise in 1976—but the main focus of Brown and Broeske’s The Untold Story is Howard the Lady-Killer, the handsome, wealthy rock star with a visionary mind and balls of brass. Through the maze of Howard’s love life, a fascinating, intimate portrait emerges of a man who could be supremely charming and charitable, manipulative and callous. Yet, the book never loses sight of the central villain: Howard’s obsessive-compulsive disorder, the symptoms of which were made worse by numerous head injuries. In the light of this condition, much of Hughes’ seemingly strange behavior is understood. Brown and Broeske do go some length to maintain an air of respect for the man, making impressive use of secondary sources to dutifully dispel some of the erroneous rumors hovering around Howard Hughes, elevating The Untold Story above the dreadful tabloid biographies that plague the market. It’s likely there will always be an air of mystery around Howard Hughes, but The Untold Story does an admirable job in presenting a coherent insight into an extraordinary figure.

I was a little disappointed in the proportion of this book that was dedicated to his love affairs. No doubt, reading how he related to women gives some insight into his character and his declining mental state. However, I'd say 60%-70% of this book reads like a who's who of Howard Hughes' girl friends and lovers and read like a tabloid magazine of affairs and break ups. Howard Hughes was a very interesting man who achieved much more than bedding a laundry list of women. I wish Mr. Brown had given more focus to those other aspects of Howard Hughes' life.

If you are tired of reading books that educate you, then this one is where you might enjoy wasting your time. If you've ever read the gossip rags, Enquirer and such then you'll know what I mean. The authors document just about every woman Hughes bedded but who cares? The best part of the book was his flying events and tragedies.

It is well written. The idea of a storyteller in the story is not unique but very effective. We could ponder over the word darkness for quite some time. The best way to ponder is with Cliff's Notes. Personally I wanted him to get on with it. I guess I was a little impatient for the action and the conclusion. If it hadn't been for cliff notes I would have missed haft the things he was implying.A merchant company is missing an agent Kurtz, and Marlowe must find him. Traveling though harsher environments than he imagined possible he may have found what he was seeking. As with many of this type of epic the physical distance or direction is not as important then the transformation it plays on ones soul.I missed this book somehow in school. The reason I started to read this book before actually I actually became immersed in it, was to see how close it came to the movie. No not the movie you are thinking of. "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death" (1988). The film was shot primarily in the avocado groves maintained by the University of California at Riverside (UCR), which the university uses for horticultural experiments. There are many books out there on positive thinking that paint rosy pictures as they embrace the concept of "just think positive and your life will be perfect too." And about the time I'd really wrap my brain around the idea that I must always think positive inevitably, something totally beyond my control, would go terribly wrong. A family member would be diagnosed with a serious illness. Or my spouse would lose his job. Next thing I know I'm blaming myself for not thinking positive enough and tossing the book aside, thinking that it's nothing more than feel-good New Age hooey."The Law of Attraction" has an entirely different approach. First the author talks about the power of the words we speak and the words we think. Then he applies practical, common sense excercises to help up change the way were perceive things so we can open our minds to the possibility getting the things we really want in life.Maybe it's coincidence, (or maybe it's not), but as I've been reading this book some of the things I desire the most are coming my way. No, I've not won the lotto, but little things are improving. And it's those little improvements that have a way of adding up to becoming big things.Of course, I can't guarantee you'll win the lotto or the perfect man or woman will miraculously show up at your door if you read this book. But if nothing else, it may have you rethinking about the way you look at life.

*****I am a student of the Law of Attraction (LOA) and have many books on the topic. I would highly recommend that no matter how many books you have, you also get this book. What makes it unique is that it is very applied, very technical (in a good way) so that you can debug your process of applying the LOA so that it will work for you. For example, you will discover why affirmations may not be working for you, and what to do to craft affirmations that do work. You'll discover HOW to "allow", which is the most difficult step of the LOA.The book is an easy read, and a valuable read that anyone can understand, but will be of great interest to sophisticated readers also.The author includes a valuable chapter on using the LOA with children, a topic not covered anywhere else that I have found.The book's format is one that lends itself to easy skimming as you learn to apply the LOA so that you can review (summaries, shaded boxes, etc.). Still, it is a book that I've read in its entirety twice and will read again and again until I am proficient at applying the concepts.Although the book is short (144 pages) and only takes an hour or two to read, it is incredibly valuable information, well worth many times the price.*****

This is my humble suggestion: "Please do not get this book as your introduction to the "Law of Attraction". There is only one (short) page on "The Science of the Law of Attraction", which doesn't explain, show, or prove anything regarding why or how it works.But if you are comfortable with, believe and understand "The Law" and are still looking for a book that would show you a simpler way to use it on your day-to-day activities, then this is the book for you.When I noticed this was a "how to" book I thought to myself: "Oh no, lost money here, I already know the 3 steps, I already know about paying attention to the feelings, etc... What new information could I ever find useful in this book?"I was pleasantly surprised.I think the power of this book is in its simpe, focused and specific approach. The author is able to breakdown the three steps into examples and exercises that are based on challenges and desires we face everyday. They actually make a lot of sense and you might find yourself saying: "a ha! That is how you do it!"

I've actually taken Michael Losier's class on the Law of Attraction more than four years ago and am gratified to see how his principals for self-improvement have taken flight with more people these days. His useful and gratefully brief handbook has been within arm's length for some time now, as I view it as an essential primer for helping me to take charge of my own possibilities. Even if the material is well-trodden by the number of positive thinking tomes in circulation, Losier's book stands out as a sensible, stepwise manual for drawing positive vibrations in one's life. Using his acumen as an instructor, he identifies three key steps in realizing these goals: (1) identifying desire and using contrast as a means to discern it; (2) giving desire the energy of attention through what he terms as a vibrational bubble; and (3) allowing desire to come into fruition.What I appreciate most about Losier's approach versus others who have adapted the same philosophy is his ability to cut through much of the populist New Age-speak to get to the day-to-day practicalities of dwelling on the positive in furthering a professional career or improving a love life. For those like me who have already been drawn to the Toltec-based wisdom of Don Miguel Ruiz's "The Four Agreements", Losier's book provides a helpful complement in sustaining the same self-fulfillment ethos. I particularly respect the viewpoint that he espouses about the universe being an entity not to be controlled but one to be facilitated through its consummate obedience. It becomes a matter of personal focus as to what to seize in one's life, not the avoidance of the negative things we are afraid will come true. Perhaps Norman Vincent Peale coined the concept of positive thinking, but his was based more on exclusionary tactics and armchair thinking. Losier knows that it takes true action to draw the things people want in their lives.

Isaiah Berlin was a Fellow of All Souls and New College, Professor of Social and Political Theory, and founding President of Wolfson College. He also held the Presidency of the British Academy. This volume presents Berlin's main essays on Liberty, including the "Four Essays on Liberty", considered by himself as his most important book. They are preceded by a long "Introduction" which explains his thought and the profound debates to which it gave birth. "Political Ideas in the Twentieth Century" explains the historical-philosophical genesis of the great schools of thought that dominated the turbulent XX Century and which can basically - with an infinity of subtleties, minor coincidences, and internal contradictions - be synthesized in the division between those schools that tried to find totalizing - and frequently totalitarian - solutions for human problems, at least the ones pertaining to public affairs, and those other schools that tried to discover the basic rules of human interaction and respect, building upon which those individuals and the groups voluntarily formed by them may pursue their ends and ideas in an interference-free environment, even taking into account the inevitable confusions and chaos that may ensue. In the background, there is the old and never resolved tension between "security" and "freedom": between the sacrifice of doubt and dissent lest a pretended harmony and consensus on means and ends perils, on the one hand, and the uncomfortable acceptance of a certain degree of cacophony, ups and downs, and conflict, which nevertheless allows for a fecund interplay of the different individuals' freedoms and the fruits of imagination in action."The Historical Inevitability" portrays the anxiety, reinforced by the perceived accuracy of prediction of the sciences, to discover the "laws" of History, analogous to sciences' laws, which allow us to find causal and necessary explanations to the results of the human interaction of millions of individuals, which are thus reduced to mere instruments or puppets of huge, impersonal and irresistible forces. This anxiety's children, Relativism and Determinism, annihilate the person and have produced chaos, confusion and great violence."Two Concepts of Freedom", the most famous and controversial of his essays, analyzes the difference between negative freedom (freedom "from"), and positive freedom (freedom "to"). Negative freedom rests at the base of individual dignity, and of course it's not absolute. Building from a basic consensus (John Rawls's "overlapping consensus"?) about absolutely unacceptable behaviors in a society (at the same time limits and guarantees of one's own freedom), the individual must be free to do as he pleases, given that he assumes responsibility for the consequences of his actions. Positive freedom is a paradox, since it can be either a complement or a negation of the negative type. It is the freedom to intervene in other people's affairs. In its "benign" version (although Berlin never makes this division explicit), positive freedom can be used to gather wills in favor of the common good. But in its "pernicious" version, this freedom can be used to impose on others behaviors unwanted by them, that is, to impose unacceptable limits to their negative freedom. Which is where it always, almost inevitably, tends to go. Therefore, the fundamental political struggle must be the permanent defense of the negative freedoms. It's difficult to find a more lucid and clear presentation of liberty's dilemmas, as well as of a definition of personal dignity."John Stuart Mill and the Ends of Life" presents MIll's thought, and above all the central epiphany that, very early on, defined his life: the discovery of emotions, that happiness can not be imposed and not even determined a priori; but that it is an uncertain and difficult task that, if ever, can only be reached, lost, and reappraised by each individual through his free and deliberate action, necessarily confusing, and only limited by other people's freedom. It is, thus, a passionate defense of diversity and the infinite possibilities of human life."Free of All Hope and Fear", examines the paradoxical (although not necessarily incompatible) relationship between knowledge and freedom. Am I freer every time I learn something new? Is more education conducive to more freedom? It's hard to affirm or deny it outright. That both knowledge and freedom are good, it seems certain. That all "good" things are always compatible, is not so clear."The Birth of Greek Individualism" is, particularly, an iconoclast and provoking essay. It refutes the ingrained idea that, after the battle of Cheronea, in 338 BC, and the dissolution of Athenian splendor, a moral and intellectual decadence prevailed. Maybe not. Maybe that disruption of the "organic community" was not a disaster, but a liberation. For several centuries, knowledge remained free from politics and pursued more fruitful paths, free from the burden of public affairs. The divorce between morals and politics; interior life as the authentic life; morals and happiness as attributes of the individual's, and not of the whole polis; gave way perhaps to a great breathing room, to peace and intellectual progress.The volume closes with a "Final Retrospective" and three autobiographical texts which round up a magnificent edition of one of the richest, most original, freshest, and most provoking philosophical oeuvres of all time. A work that is more alive than ever, more needed, more authentic and contrary to the inanities of politicians, prophets, ideologues, and other sunder current and permanent charlatans. The product of a truly free mind, at the same time profound and swift, it is certainly one of the best products of philosophy of our time.

The Late Isaiah Berlin was authority on philosophy and a historian of ideas. Born in Latvia, he moved to Russia with his parents when he was six. As an eight year-old he witnessed the May Revolution and the October Bolshevik Revolution that installed Lennin and instituted the Soviet reign of terror. He escaped to England with his family in 1921 where he was educated at St. Paul's School and Oxford, University. His early experience with totalitarianism colored his life's work in the world of ideas and throughout his career he was an articulate and sometimes lonely voice for liberty and the liberal, pluralistic society. This book "Liberty" is a newly edited and expanded edition of Berlin's most famous work "Four Essays in Liberty." Since his death, his editor Henry Hardy had drawn together his books and essays and they have been assembled in new editions. In "Liberty" he sets out to follow the concept of Liberty. In one of the most illuminating essays he sets out to answer the question: "What is Political Liberty" which then segues into the "The Birth of Greek Individualism." In "Two Concepts of Liberty" he takes western intellectuals to task for the results of the dangerous ideas that they heralded. He cites Henrich Heine who warned us that "philosophical concepts in the stillness of a professor's study could destroy a civilization." In his essay "Historical Inevitably" he attacks the Marxist notion that there are inevitable stages of history, that one stage follows another as winter follows fall and he traces the path of thought in the past terrible epoch in "Political Ideas in the 20th Century." Each of the essays are thoughtful, trenchant and well argued. In a time when far too many intellectuals still adhere to ideas that were the foundation of terror, Isaiah Berlin's advocacy and exploration of human freedom should find a wide audience.
