About the Author

Tom Watson lives in Chicago with his wife, daughter, and son. He also has a dog, as you could probably guess. The dog is a Labrador-Newfoundland mix. Tom says he looks like a Labrador with a bad perm. He wanted to name the dog "Put Your Shirt On" (please don't ask why), but he was outvoted by his family. The dog's name is Shadow. Early in his career Tom worked in politics, including a stint as the chief speechwriter for the governor of Ohio. This experience helped him develop the unique, storytelling narrative style of the Stick Dog books. More important, Tom's time in politics made him realize a very important thing: Kids are way smarter than adults. And it's a lot more fun and rewarding to write stories for them than to write speeches for grown-ups.

I bought this and several others from the "Stick Dog" collection for my 8-1/2 year old who has little interest in reading at home at the moment. I think she's going to really like these, they're funny and cute and she loves animals - especially dogs. Hoping these will boost her interest, and looking forward to seeing her face when she opens them on Christmas Day.

Bought this for our 7-year old son after having previously bought him "Stick Dog Wants a Hot Dog". He reads like crazy, but these books are a little different from what he was used to, so I ended up reading that one to him, and he loved it.When I bought this new one, I was concerned he might still be intimidated by it, but he picked it right up and read it in two days, laughing the whole time.Will be buying the first book in the series next, and then patiently waiting for a new release!

My 7 year old LOVES Stick Dog and friends. The entire series is wonderful and filled with humor. He even loves the drawings. I use this book along with my homeschool curricula, giving my son Stick Dog assignments. It helps him enjoy his work.

I'm really enjoying this book as an intermediate python programmer looking to learn more "pythonic" ways of doing things and taking advantage of the full standard library and more performant practices. This book is very practical and you can skip around in no particular order and there are concise code examples to demonstrate the ideas contained in each tip. This book is more about the philosophy of good code design and scalability than it is a workbook to accomplish specific tasks, so don't expect to read it and code along and make really interesting projects. Instead, think of this book as a set of best practices to make your code more easily debugged, easier to read, easier for other people to use, and hopefully have better performance as well.

Very good book. Starts with basics, but it quickly goes into 'magic' territory, so whether you're a veteran or just wanting to see what's special about Python, you will find some new approaches.The examples are clear. They are not some 'dry' Class X, method Y sort of examples, they tend to use examples that better illustrate the scenario; so if you at first don't get the author's explanation, you might see what's going on because of the connotations that come with sensible examples.The formatting and layout are fairly good, especially with syntax highlighting code. There are few goofy spots where text talks about code that's displayed on the next page, so to relate one to the other you need to flip pages back'n'forth, and some tables/boxes spill over to the next page for like two lines. But that's just minor nit-picking.My biggest 'complaint' is about what's NOT in the book. There is only a slight mention of itertools, or any functional programming concepts, that are so neatly baked into Python. There is also very slim amount of information on testing, which I would like to read more about, as it's become very commonplace. I would love to see a second edition of this book with extended sections on the aforementioned topics.

Although I'm only about half way through the book I've already learned a lot of really cool tricks that I've actually applied in my own programs since. (I hate learning tricks that aren't that useful in practical use cases) So far, I especially enjoyed the sections about list comprehension and generators. Generators were completely new to me and I was amazed at how useful they are for large data sets!There's lots of cool tricks to learn. The chapters are short enough where you can just sit down for 15 minutes and knock one out. This is great for me when I just want to read a little before bed, but I've also sat down and read the book for a few hours at a time. I've had no problems with the Kindle version. Although you can skip around in the book, I recommend a front to back read, as some of the concepts build on each other.

This is exactly what I needed. I have been programming Python for a couple of years as a hobbyist, but to a degree flying by the seat of my pants. This book, in bite-sized-chunks, formalises my understanding of dozens of topics which a professional programmer should know about. The author is such a professional programmer (at google no less). I am grateful for this book, and I have already ordered the Javascript version.

Excellent book. As someone who is new to python but has learned many other languages, this book was perfect for highlighting nuanced aspects of the language. The format of this book also makes it easy to revisit topics for occasional tune ups.Many programming books today function almost as language documentation. Few do what this book does; focus on the how and why.

For self educated person, essential book to read.

Haven't finished reading it yet. I use it as a guide to write better, cleaner code at work and it's been wonderful so far. For example, my docstrings are much more consistent and coherent. This book is useful even for experienced Python developers.

Just an awesome read. Each item is just the perfect length to dedicate half-an-hour of each morning to study. Great examples, nicely formatted, great pace. Love this book.

A moving portrayal of the before and after of 9/11 and how it affects two teens and their families. Alia is a Muslim teen trying to break free of her parents’ wishes. She ends up at her father’s workplace in the Twin Towers on Sept 11, 2001. Jesse McLaurin is a teenager who lost her brother in the 9/11 tragedy. Jesse’s family is now broken and silent about the event. Alternating narratives tell how the past informs the present, and how grief and memory merge and linger.Warning to readers: this is a slow read at the beginning. It took almost 35% before the action really built. And it’s somber, as befits the topic. But the thing is, even though this isn’t an easy read, I think it’s one worth reading, for a few reasons:1) I’ve never read a book that tries to portray what happened on 9/11 to people who were in the Towers. I felt this was done accurately, honestly, and respectfully for a teen audience.2) The portrayal of grief, trauma, and a family still broken by what happened that day was really well done as well, showing the after effects of 9/11, even 15 years later.3) This book tackles racial issues, hatred, prejudice, and grief in a way that is really compassionate and comprehensible.If I have qualms, they are that I just didn’t fully connect with either Alia or Jesse. I think the concept of the book overcame the actual characterization of them. That said, I’m glad I read All We Have Left. It showed such a variety of perspectives on grief and trauma, and how to articulate and move past them. It definitely made me think about how we’ve changed as people and as a world after 9/11 .Teachers, this is one for the school library and the classroom, and it’s a great one to spark discussion.

GRADE: BOn September 11, 2001 Alia skips school to see her father at work in The World Trade Centers. In 2016 Jesse must perform community service at a Muslim Peace Center after being caught making anti Islamic graffiti. Their stories intersect in surprising ways.The first quarter of ALL WE HAVE LEFT started slowly, but the pace picked up and near the end I almost felt like I was reading a thriller, eager to discover if Alia survived. Wendy Mills did phenomenal research into 9/11 and the Muslim community, not painting the Islamic characters with a broad brush. Each had unique personalities and approaches to their faith. Some wore hijabs, others did not.Mills created a diverse cast of minor character with different personalities and beliefs. While ALL WE HAVE LEFT is an issues book about prejudice, I never felt that Mills was heavy handed in her message of the complexities of hate. There were no easy answers and no one character had the complete moral high ground.The intersection between past and present, Alia's and Jesse's stories, though mostly indirect, unfolded organically without artificial coincidences.ALL WE HAVE LEFT is a timely story, and Islamic prejudice is still prominent in the USA. I think this novel would be great reading for middle or high school students.

She just gets it.I think it is very brave of her to venture into writing a book like this that is extremely thought-provoking and deals with many controversial and difficult issues. She handles it really well though, and with the utmost respect to all sides and parties involved. Not to mention that her prose is beautiful. She succeeds in being poignant, witty, creative, and honest all at once, displaying a writing skill that leaves you green with envy.Every interaction, every moment, every emotion, every action was on point. The struggles, emotionally, physically and most importantly, spiritually, were incredibly relatable. As a teenager, as a mother, as a female, as a Muslim, as an Arab, Mills was able to tap into every aspect in ways that no other author, especially a White American (and I say this with so much respect for her), was able to. I have never before read a book about a Muslim girl, her struggles and 9/11 that was so honest and true to our experiences as Muslim girls. It is honest and raw, and many people might find that unacceptable, or might have an issue with how some experiences were related, but all I have to say to that is: you can live in denial all you want, but those are real experiences that even Muslims (both guys and girls) go through and struggle with. No one is perfect, and this is your reality check.All We Have Left tells the story of two coming-of-age girls, one in the present, the other in the past. It talks about their experiences with 9/11, one right in the midst of it, the other many years later and the affect it's had (and still has) on her family.You always hear about the world being divided into before 9/11 and after 9/11, and this book portrays those two timelines perfectly. On one end of the spectrum you have Alia, who rushes to catch her dad at his office before going to school because she needs him to sign a slip of paper. Her father works at the World Trade Centre, and on that morning, when she gets in the elevator with a boy called Travis, the elevator stops working, and they get stuck inside for a while. What happens next is gut-wrenching, terrifying and will leave you sitting at the edge of your seats.On the other end of the spectrum is Jesse, a sixteen-year-old troubled girl, who had lost her older brother almost fifteen years ago at the September 11 attacks, and although she barely remembers him, but his ghost and presence had continued to haunt her family. His death changed her parents, split her family apart, and had a direct effect to the person she grew up to be. So many details about her brother's death remain a mystery to her, the reason he was in the towers at the time of the attacks is unknown to her family, and they've always refused to speak to anyone publicly about it. Instead, her mother keeps herself busy with work and her father spends his time watching the news and raging at the Muslim terrorists. Jesse grew up in an extremely racist household. She grew up listening to her father bad mouthing every Muslim, and spouting so much hate towards them, wishing them dead or worse. She grew up grieving for a brother she never knew, she grew up with an identity that was thrown at her - the girl whose brother died tragically in 9/11 - and she grew up blaming all Muslims for the death of her 18 year old brother.Not surprising then when Jesse gets involved with a bunch of graffiti artists who put out anti-Muslim messages around town. Except, with Jesse's bad luck, she ends up getting caught and having to do community service at a Muslim Peace Center. This experience makes her question everything she knew and thought of them and allows her to learn more about herself. It also brings up questions of her brother, and makes her curious to find out what really happened to him that day.As she delves into the past, we get both stories told simultaneously, one from Alia's perspective and the other from Jesse's. As the past and the present gently collide and meet in the middle, we watch as the two girls' worlds interweave together so it all makes sense, and balances out perfectly, all while breaking our hearts.At one point, I could feel myself breath heavy, like a weight was sitting on my chest, and I needed to thrash and scream to get it off me. It's that kind of book, with that kind of emotion.I have so much respect for Mills, for how she handled the stories and events and for not sugarcoating any of it. I loved the character development of both girls. Jesse's character development spanned a longer period of time, whereas Alia's character development spanned the course of a few hours - and that alone, is an impressive feat. I also loved all the secondary characters and the role they played in the development of our protagonists.This book is a keeper. It's a lesson. Its one for the teachers at schools. It's one for the parents at home.This book is important.

one of the best books. I even visited the island this past week where it all took place. That made it all come to life. I just wish I had been able to meet the author. I did meet one of his former students that was attending the school while he was there. She was at the restaurant where our boat docked on the island.

I have read most of Pat's books, except this first one. I felt "The Water is Wide" was amazing, truly a great first 'virgin" book written by a young man who had no idea how far his influence would travel. Pat showed his great talent early on with his descriptive way of sharing his experiences, his views on life and the people who crossed his path. His impact on the children of Yamacraw Island was immense. To work with children whose circumstances were so grim proved to be quite a shock, language skills were absent, reading non-existent, with some having not even the most rudimentary speaking skills. Pat took it upon himself to find unconventional teaching methods to reach them was not welcome from the "system" in place there. Being so isolated prevented them from learning even the most basic and elementary standards, and Pat creatively developed ways to gain their attention and interest, and provided them with experiences that they would never forget. The perseverance Pat showed in hanging in there, despite working against all odds, i.e., the "administration", the transportation to the island by boat which in itself, was a great challenge, and the conditions there that were horrendous, was life-changing not only for the "students" but for the people of Yamacraw Island. I felt this book proved that Pat Conroy was always born to be a writer, born to change lives, and open doors to the beauty of life that can be found even in a place like Yamacraw Island.

As a former teacher in a very poor county in North Carolina just a few years after Conroy's experience, I related to this book in the first few pages. I am a lover of "all things Pat Conroy", and this one did not disappoint. His writing is beautifully poignant, sometimes invoking laughter, sometimes tears, but always sincere and believable. The challenges he faced defy reason in more ways than one, but his undaunted spirit prevailed. If you are a teacher, and think you've had a bad day/year, put this on your reading list. How would you have faced this challenge? I'd hope with the same tenacity in the face of circumstances as well as the school administration. The love he had for his challenged students shines through and your admiration for him will jump up several notches by the time you finish this touching story.

I grew up in a very small town in Missouri during part of my childhood. That little patch of land had one cotton gin, cotton fields that surrounded everything with dirt roads and ditches alongside them. Having moved from near Pittsburgh to be there, I was, in the estimation of my teachers, advanced in my learning and skills. This was sixth grade, mind you, so I had about as much intelligence as most of the kids in my previous school.Living there, I got a good picture of what it was like associating with children that weren't as academically challenged as I had been. In fact, it was at first very complimentary to hear I was an excellent pupil, but after a time, I really wanted less attention, to fit in with my friends, who were mostly boys that thought the greatest achievement was the number of swats given by the gym coach they accumulated over the course of the semester.What life was like outside of class was hard work in my grandfather's scrap yard, hunting, and learning the skills needed to excel as a country boy: how to hone my knife, how to tell what kind of metal I was holding in my hand -- I always carried a magnet -- how to clean a shotgun and make fishing sinkers from molds into which we poured molten lead. So, why was there any need for anymore education than to learn to add, subtract and read reasonably well?That's how I view Yamacraw. Just what was it those children needed to survive in the environment they were accustomed? Not much. To advance, they had to have experiences and knowledge that created other thoughts, experiences and dreams. And that is exactly what Pat Conroy took to their island, the map to a new life full of more insight than they could have ever thought possible. Plus, he did it in the most extraordinary ways with field trips, slides and movies that were never before used, just stashed away in a seldom opened closet. Seeing those tools, Mr. Conrack knew just what to do. With whatever he had, he made use of it, and always, in his most amazing speeches turned experiences into learning. This game is TINY! It’s fun but it’s so small it’s impossible. The “bags” are smaller than a thumb nail and the “boards” are smaller than a dollar bill

for decoration only...LOL Not playable at all. But I am okay with the product, for it was purchased for decoration.

Bought this as a stocking stuffer for my gf who recently realized she likes cornhole. I mostly expected it to just be a boring decoration type gift but we keep finding ourselves here and there throwing the tiny bags at the tiny boards. We've already far exceeded the use I anticipated this would get and we aren't done playing with it. The booklet it comes with is also helpful if you don't know how to play or want to learn terms of the game. Very coolgift - would highly recommend for the cornhole lover in your life.

I loved the idea of this for a white elephant gift; however, it is extremely tiny. I expected it to be a little bigger. I expected the corn holes to be the size of a phone, but they are half the size of a smart phone. I expected the bean bags to be the size of a Cheez-It; however, they are the size of 1 bean and very light. It is hard to make toss the bean bags because they do not weigh enough.

Came missing the 4 blue "bean bags" bean bags are made of paper and the size of a pinky nail. This isn't meant to be a toy, nor is it worth the $10 I paid.

Bought this as a gag gift when my mom asked for corn hole boards for Christmas. Did end up actually getting her a real size set but this miniature version was fun to play too and not as easy as it looks.

This game is super cute but more for looks than to play. The bean bags are just tiny pieces of cloth, so you cant really toss them or play the game.

Got this as a stocking stuffer for my husband. I think he took it to work, I'll take that as a good sign but I never actually saw it out of the box!

I purchased the 2018 update to the 2006 edition. Essence of approach is high fiber and high protein. However, except for a new foreword -- the book appears to have dated 2006 content and doesn't incorporate the significant nutritional findings which have occurred over the past decade. For example -- guidance still references the dated view that eggs impact cholesterol which is no longer an accurate view. Nor does the book incorporate findings on gut microbiology. Very much a shame as several of these further support the importance of high fiber diet. If you follow a minimal or non-meat approach -- this book won't give you much guidance and support. 90+% of protein suggestions or recipes are based on animal protein. Lastly, a quibble -- I wish the author utilized a more precise approach on serving sizes. The bulk of the food lists use volume measurements (cups) and don't include a weight measurement (grams or ounces). For measuring foods, like fruit or vegetables --- you can significantly impact the actual food amounts by measuring a cup of small diced versus large chopped or sliced food. While I recognize that not everyone has a kitchen scale ---seems silly not to have included both as part of the point is increasing recognition for what a true 'serving size' is.

I've tried other types of healthy eating, but they seemed to fall short of helping me achieve my goals. I found this book at the library and its philosophy is so simple it never feels like dieting. As others have posted increasing fiber is the key. Using My Fitness Pal to track what I'm eating also helps. It helped me to see that even if I thought I was eating healthy, a lot of what I was eating was heavy on the calories.

This book has literally changed they way I consume food, PERMANENTLY. It is not a diet plan. It's a way to eat healthy without going hungry for the rest of your life. I've lost 15 pounds in 2 months and 2 pant sizes with zero exercise. I'm a 44yr old male who was reasonably fit until my late 30's when my metabolism started to slow. This is the only thing I've found to work and it fits my lifestyle really well. Give it a try. Heck, I don't even follow the recommendations to the letter - just the basic principals.

I love the straight forward, science-backed information. The writing is very concise. I bought this kindle book after reading that Megyn Kelly follow this diet. The description of glycogen, digestible fiber, & different sugar molecules was very easy to follow.

This book is OK. She really should have rewritten this book before she went on Dr OZ and advertised it. She recommends products that no longer exist, the book reads like every other diet book. There is nothing in here that I did not know already, but I read a lot of these books. I think she can do better if she gave it a re-write.

This high fiber way of eating (plus taking J.CROW'S Lugol's Solution of Iodine 5 Percent) is the ONLY thing that's positively effected my estrogen dominance and low energy issues. I've had to be very strict and completely eliminate sugar (stevia is a great substitute). But my energy is fantastic, I finally sleep well at night, and my tummy is very flat. I turned to this diet less for the flat tummy and more for managing my estrogen dominance, but I'm happy:) A typical breakfast is 1/2 cup Smart Bran cereal, 1/2 cup low-fat organic kefir, 1/2 cup organic raspberries; snack is 4 GG crackers with chocolate PB2. Easy to follow, fantastic results.
