I'm a special education teacher in Texas. I got this book for one of my paraprofessionals who is trying to become a sped teacher. I read through it before giving it to her. There were a few things that weren't explained thoroughly or clearly and I had to make notes in it before giving it to her. But for someone who doesn't have sped teaching experience, it will help and be a good starting point. I recommend that when you come across something that seems unclear or doesn't have enough explanation- you research it on the internet to get a better understanding. If you use that method- you should do well. Do not use an old study guide!! Buy this updated book if you are going to study for the test! Terms and concepts in sped are forever changing so be up to date!
Let me start by saying, I am not a test taker. I have always struggled with tests; the anxiety I get from taking tests is insurmountable. That being said sometimes you just have to suck it up and get it done haha. Anyway, I bought this book to study for the SPED certification test in May. After reading through all of it, I took the first exam at the end of the book, and got an 80. I really loved that it had the answers with in depth explanations. After I got the 80, I went back to the areas that needed additional attention and I studied and took notes on things that I thought were important. The closer it came to taking the real certification test, I had gone through and scanned the book once more. I reviewed and answered 75/135 of the questions from the second section. By that point, I felt comfortable enough to take the test. I tested on 7/22/16, and got my scores back today, and I passed with flying colors! I would say the questions that helped the most were the scenario questions. They helped me think on a higher level and think about how to handle certain situations. I would say this book was perfect for preparing for this test, though, I should also note that I have worked as a SPED aide at an elementary school for about a year, so my experience probably did play a part in passing the test.My only complaint is that I wish the book had a little bit more information about Autism. Other than that, I would say this is a great choice!Good luck y'all! Hope this helped.
I just took the actual test and very few questions from the two practice tests were actually on the test. Not one actual math question where you had to solve. There were some situational math questions but overall this test is very heavy on the reading/language arts side. So much so I’d say you’d be wise to study an English test review on TEA site. Not one question relating to a specific law or year. Even the TEA prep manual was not close to actual test, but it was better than this book and it’s free. Wish I had more advice I’ll know in a week if I passed.
I used this book to study for my content test and I passed! It definitely laid the groundwork for me passing this test, but I would HIGHLY recommended getting another book that delves into the following: Autism, Asperger's, and the ARD process. This test does test reasoning skills, but if you don't know the facts, you will not pass. I'm glad that I did, but I certainly wasn't expecting to. Whereas the REA book for I bought for the Generalist 4-8 test was PERFECT for that test, this one is nothing like the real thing.
This book is an EXCELLENT study resource! Using this book coupled with the TEA practice test and a few online quizlet flashcards, I passed the first time with a score of 279! The practice tests at the back of the book were particularly helpful because they help you understand Sped concepts.
I bought this book off Amazon and studied for exactly 19 days! If you’re looking to get certified in Special Education EC-12, this book is for you!! I’ve never been a great test taker and had zero experience/background information in sped at all. This book helped me pass my content test on the first try! It’s very organized and to the point! I promise you, it’s worth every penny! YOU CAN pass the test, and your first step in the right direction is purchasing this book. Good luck to all and God Bless!
If you are looking for a book that will help you study for Sp. Ed test, then this is it. I only had a week to study and take the test, and this book is what I used. I was able to pass the test by just using this book. By the way, I bought the test prep book for more $$ from the official website of the testing company and that only had 70 questions and with less detailed explanations. I got value for my money with this test prep book.
The company was supposed to send me an email with an access code to take the test on line. The link for the online version did not take me to the test at all. I tried to call the company, but since it was the weekend I could not speak to anyone. This meant I had to take the test by paper and pencil and could not get data as to which domain I needed to concentrate on when studying. I feel that the sample test in the book did not reflect an accurate sample of the actual test. It was a waste of time and money. I am very disappointed.
I just got my score and I PASSED on the first try. I took others advice and stuck to a schedule of studying and reading this book. I also took practice tests and got Quizlet on my phone and I did it on the first try. Thank you God. To God be the Glory. Take your time during the test and read the questions carefully. The test questions were a little harder then the book questions but it helped. Also down load the testing companies study manuals they in conjunction with this book helped with everything.
