When I became aware that a book had recently come out which spoke of the experiences of a black gay man living in the US, I was interested to know just how true a picture was being painted. I had heard so many stories about LGBT persons in North America and the various interactions and subcultures, and thinking back on my own experiences in the Caribbean as a Trans woman, I wondered how similar or different the two locations could be. After buying and reading the book, I would have to brand this book as required reading for any person who wanted to be acquainted with the realities of LGBT life.“Chocolate Bar†is more than just a book about a gay man in North America and his friends. It is more than just the experiences that they go through. It’s a serious eye-opener, an interrogative composition which focuses on matters regarding sexual preference, race, culture and societal expectations. More sobering are the various facets of life which the LGBT community face, and how out society is actually a part of the equation. Notwithstanding, “Chocolate Bar†is a book that’s intended for both the diehard intellectual seeking an avenue to pick apart the world we’re in and see how it ticks as well as the imaginative individual who seeks a riveting jolt to their imagination. Personally, I’ve been left disappointed that the book was so short given how enveloped I became in the plot, yet for that same reason, I’m yearning for more and hoping to see a continuation of the plot of “Chocolate Bar†and the paths of its characters.Once again, I encourage anyone who is interested in books which centre around LGBT characters and lives to get their hands on this book.
Just to start off WOW. In just the short pages of this story, I very quickly came to care about these characters and their lives.More in-depth, this provides a very interesting view into the LGBTQ community and discrimination therein. Very easy to relate to as someone who has dealt with these issues first hand. Makes you wonder how we demand equality from outside the community but within it, there's an almost hypocritical mentality that causes divisions amongst us. Anyways I've become emotionally invested in all these people in this story and I cannot wait to see where life takes them next. It's a (too) short, intense story of life, relationships, happiness, hatred, fear, sadness, regret, perhaps even love somewhere in there and I'm super excited for more :D
The day that changed Theodores life. This book had me on the edge of my seat!I love the glimpse that we get into the lives of these characters! As a straight woman, after reading this I feel like I've been sheltered. It definitely opened my eyes to the norms that exist within the LBGTQ community.I love that you are able to get more than just one story, and although the book revolves around Theodore, we are able to see how the people he is connected to handle their situations that they are put in. Very realistic, almost like I was there. A lot can happen in one day!Highly recommended, and cannot wait for the next installment!
Riveting well-written story of the life of a gay Black man from NYC. This is a raw story with explicit verbiage. Gorgeously illustrated cover, but not for kiddies. Highly recommend. Cheers.
This book has really touch me and touched on a lot of topics and I would advise anyone to buy this book! I was well put together and just beautiful! Couldn’t put the book down for a second!
This book is amazing! There’s a surprise around every corner ... & the ending OMG ! Definitely can’t wait for there to be another one.
