Leonardo Padura was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1955. A novelist, journalist, and critic, he is the author of several novels, including The Man Who Loved Dogs (FSG, 2014); two volumes of short stories; and several nonfiction collections. Cuban author Leonardo Padura has written an epic novel, "Heretics", that will either be loved or hated. Mine is a 5 star review, but I'll bet it will be balanced by 1 star reviews. It's a long novel, separated into three sections, and there's a thought that if you get to section 3, it might not come together, but, it does. And what an ending, tying everything that come before it into a wonderful, bittersweet package."Heretics" is a sort of mish-mash of Jewish, Cuban, Dutch, and Polish history. Characters arrive in Cuba in the 1930's; some are able to stay and others forced to leave when the ship, "St Louis", is turned away from Cuban refuge in Spring, 1939. Young Daniel Kaminsky, sent ahead of his parents and sister from Germany, was able to stay with his uncle, a master leather worker. His family, sent back to Europe, died in the Holocaust. But what of the small Rembrandt painting Daniel's father had been carrying with them and was being used to bargain their way off the St Louis, and into a safe haven? The bargaining didn't work but the picture stayed behind in Havana as the ship sailed off. Later it was found for sale in a London auction house. Daniel Kaminsky grew up in Havana and forsook his religious beliefs, converting, and marrying a Catholic woman. Later they moved to Miami, where they had a son, Elias. Elias became a painter and as he grew older, he wondered about his parents' past in Havana and, curiously, about the lost Rembrandt. He contacted an retired policeman to help him when he visits the island in 2007. The man, Mario Conde, has his own story.I don't want to write much more about the plot or the characters. The book bounces back and forth between Cuba and Holland, between the 1600's of Rembrandt and the 20th century, between murders that may or may not be murders. There aren't many novels who combine the false Messiah Sabbatai Zevi and an "emo" in Havana in 2007. As with many good novels, the reader learns as well as enjoys the book. There seemed to be a balanced look at Castro's Cuba, particularly in the recent past. Since part of the book was set in 2007, Padura writes about the living conditions and the economy but always in the course of pushing the plot forward."Heretics" - and the word describes several characters in the vast book - is a wonderful read. However, It may be too much for anybody not interested in the topics Padura takes in hand. I'd advise anyone considering buying the book to read all the other reviews that will follow mine.

I couldn't answer Amazon's question "How is the story narrated?" because I was so thoroughly entertained , regularly surprised, and almost intimidatingly impressed by the coruscating writing talent of Padura that I really don't know. I guess I could look to see if the narration is in alternating persons or third person, but I'm not going to.. In any case, there's not much (beyond assent) that I could add to the prior comments. The book's a superb read, and I heartily thank Mr. Padura for his gift.

Set in modern day and pre-revolution Cuba - with a detour to 17th century Amsterdam, Heretics is a very ambitious and accomplished novel. The McGuffin is portrait painted by Rembrandt and it figures in (and ties together) each sub-plot that also includes a "heretic" of some sort. While the main story was great, the middle section dealing with the painting of the portrait and a side plot at the end involving a modern day missing person dragged a bit. Also, two major plot "whodunits" were relatively obvious. Notwithstanding that, Heretics is a fine novel well worth the time.

A very interesting view of 3 different periods of time. The detailed views of the episode with the Saint Louis in Havana harbor was confirmed by the one I had from a friend who was an eye witness and was in a boat circling the ship in the harbor. The view of life in Cuba in the 1990s was what my impressions were while there multiple times in the early 2000s. The translation into english while just a bit stiff was quite readable. A lot about other places and times can be learnt while enjoying this book and the characters living within it.

I loved this incredibly complex, layered mystery, wrapped in an epic saga! The characters stole my heart, the intricate plot was a fascinating glimpse of a history and culture previously unknown to me, the themes were deep and timeless: what it means to be free, whether there is a God, the price paid for trespassing against the orthodoxy of the day, humankind’s horrific ciiapacity for cruelty, particularly against “the other.” Remarkably... all delivered with subtle, as well as laugh-out-loud, irony.

I like historical fiction, and Padura seems to have a passion for history, which he uses as a framework for this novel. His exploration of what it means to be a heretic in a variety of settings and communities—modern day Judaism, 17th century Judaism, modern day Cuba, an emo community, and others—is thought-provoking and challenging. He tends to write long sentences, which can weigh down the narrative, but the depth and texture of his story are worth it. Perhaps even aided by it.

Leonardo Padura - absolutely the best. I've read everything of his that's been translated to English and wish I could find more. This particular book is truly incredible.

I highly recommend this very long book that I could not put down, describing history of jews in Cuba, Florida, Poland and the Netherlands tied together by a fascinating story of lost art and believable and endearing characters.

From the description, I really could not tell how this was different from the "classic" edition of the book. It seemed the content was the same, but this had "color" illustrations. I was not sure what that would look like. The "classic" version that I already have has fairly crude drawings of maps, and some of the black and white photos were printed with such high contrast, that it was hard to make out the details of the images. This deluxe edition is really much better than the classic version. The paper is much more substantial and the photos are mostly new, and the color and exposure are really quite good. The maps have been updated, and a lot of the photos have been replaced with updated versions. Although it is hard to tell from the photo, this book is about an inch larger in the long axis and about 3/4" longer from side to side. It is also thicker, most likely from the better paper. I have only glanced through to text, and it seems to be mostly about the same (which is fine - this was always a very good reference book). The price difference between the "classic" and the "deluxe" is not prohibitive, and so I would recommend the deluxe version for anyone considering this book. I bought this as a gift, and in the future, would probably only buy the deluxe version.

This is an enormous book, to be absorbed slowly. The beginning explains how this reference book is set up. After a great deal of information on the general history of the Bible it begins with the old testament books. There is a detailed account of what is felt to be 400 years before the new testament begins. At the end there is information on church histories , thoughts on how to use it as a study guide, maps, pictures, a wealth of information. I think my own plan is to read one of the 66 books of the Bible, go back and read the reference chapter on that book. This book is just over one thousand pages and it is likely to take me a year to absorb its information. Beautiful maps, pictures, very impressive. I will warn you it is a big heavy book for serious study. Don't think you can slip it in your pocket or purse. It is textbook in size.

I was gifted my first copy of this book over 40 years ago and it has been my go-to reference when I study the Bible. I tend to read this book concurrently with my Bible reading. I have bought updated versions as they came out, to keep up with new information that was added. The book is a great reference for anyone studying the Bible, and interested in archeology and the history of the Bible. I would be a valuable asset for anyone studying Jewish history too, since almost the first ½ of the book concerns the Old Testament. It helps show that the Bible story is not an abstraction, but is rooted in history and that there are archeological evidence to support the events and places mentioned. It makes the bible more "real". It is a convenient size, so that it could be read in bed, and the typeface and font size are readable. I find it much more useful to look up things in this book when I have a question, vs. heavier tomes, such as Strong's Bible Reference. Some of the "classic" version illustrations were the only weak spot in the book. The older books had line drawn maps, which were difficult to interpret. The photos were all in black and white, and often of such high contrast, that the details were hard to appreciate. Despite these deficiencies, it is still one of the best Bible reference books out there. I saw a "deluxe" version of this book on Amazon, and ordered it along with this one, just to see what the difference would be. The price differential was not prohibitive. I would have to say that the Deluxe version is printed on much better paper, and the illustrations and photos are in color. Many of the images have been updated in the Deluxe version. The textual content appears to be the same, so there are no real changes in the substance of the book, but it does appear to be more visually appealing. It is also a larger book, by about an inch on all sides, and bit thicker. If you are interested in this book, I would recommend that you spend the extra money and get the Deluxe version. Either one will serve you well in your study of the Bible.

I can't believe it took me 20+ years to finally find a bible handbook that's so amazing and perfect and easy-to-read and understandable and fascinating. I could go on and on about this truly valuable book. It answers so many questions myself and my children have about the bible. And the photos are amazing. I love love love love love love this book and will keep it in my household forever.

I have an old Halleys, small, concise and I thought it was just wonderful. I didn't know there was a newer one until I broused Amazon. When I saw it I couldn't wait to buy it. I was amazed at the content and the up to date archeological information this new addition contains. It has made Bible study so much more real, alive, pertinent and in the now.. I cannot read my bible or study a passage without finding the sideline story in Halleysa living picture of the times, places and people.

I had a very old version of this book (all black & white photos) and very small. This is a huge improvement and a real book. Beautiful color photos and a great companion to reading the bible, with so much background information. As if a pastor was guiding you, prior to or even after, reading a book of the bible. Suburb in every way.

I found my 1957 version of Halley's Bible Handbook but noticed that so much had transpired since then that in places, it was so out-of-date. Only thing I don't like is that it is sooo big and it is a bit cumbersome to hold and read for this old lady. But it is certainly more updated in their analysis.

I have an older edition of Halley's Bible Handbook and it doesn't compare to this. I love the maps and all of the color in this handbook. It is much better than the older version I have used for a number of years. The commentary is very easy to understand and helps me to understand passages in the Bible I have questions about. I highly recommend this book as a great addition to anyone's Bible materials. It is a great book to be used with what is already the best book ever written THE HOLY BIBLE.

About the Author

Paul A. Watters received his PhD in computer science from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. The ICSL’s goal was to build capability in the cybercrime field, and to make Victoria the state of choice to undertake this type of work. In addition to numerous research publications, and skilled graduates who now protect Australia’s cyber frontline, the ICSL also produced significant outcomes for its research partners in the areas of threat mitigation (phishing, malware, identity theft, scams, piracy, child exploitation) and intelligence gathering. Dr Watters undertook consultancies for numerous external clients, including the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT), the Attorney General’s Department (AGD) and Google. While on sabbatical with the AFP, he developed an approach to detecting drug deals online. In 2013, Dr Watters took up a Professorship in IT at Massey University in New Zealand. He continued his work in online threats, especially focusing on advertising as a vector for malware delivery and social harms. He also won two Callaghan Innovation grants to develop new algorithms for data analytics. He partnered with NGOs such End Child Prostitution and Trafficking (ECPAT) to systematically examine the links between film piracy and the proliferation of child abuse material online. In 2015, Dr Watters also became an Adjunct Professor at Unitec Institute of Technology, the home of New Zealand’s first cyber security research centre. In recognition of his track record combating child abuse material online, he received an ARC Discovery grant in 2015 with colleagues at the University of Tasmania, University of Canberra and University College London.

Plus, I'm disturbed by the ambiguity of the fates of the characters...I don't need a big bow tying up the details nice and tidy, but this conclusion doesn't even bring the details into the same zipcode.The power of this novel is the cache of the author, not the story.

It's truly excellent because of the fairy tale/children's story element. It's also a story about life in England for young people in the early 70's. Suddenly, what was at the center of English social life is in ruins, and young people with imagination find themselves as misfits. This is merely my take on what the novel might represent. If you are not interested in reading books this way, you will still find The Magic Toyshop mesmerizing, entertaining, controversial, or whatever type of reading experience you wish to have. Get it.

After I wrote a mock fairy tale a professor I had suggested I read Angela Carter. She felt that I would love the satire and female strength within her books. So far I agree, this book is a funny, sweet, but in your face approach to certain genres. It is a really fun read, but doesn't waste your time. This book has many layers to it and it is breaks a lot of fairy tale taboos. It is not a children's book.

There is not much to the overall plot of this book. The strength of it lies within the wierd characters and dialog among them. I felt a few things were thrown in for shock value like the unexplained severed hand in the kitchen drawer or the 'don't see it coming revealed secret' at the end... that could have been either left out entirely or at best given us a hint about the secret.The peek hole was just down right creepy and some of the descriptions like the uncle's false teeth in the jar in the bathroom made me shudder. I had trouble with Melanie's attraction to her aunt's dirty brother with his nasty breath and teeth and unwashed stinky body. However it was this sort of thing that draws you in and makes you love the book because it IS SO macabre!The ending is lousy but in reality the whole story was not that great but it's the characters and their weirdness that will keep you reading so even with a bad ending you will go away whispering... wow...

Graphic story to begin with. Entertaining.

Angela Carter is one of my favorite authors. Her writing and use of language is truly astounding! Definitely highly recommended for fantasy lovers.

This book is just frankly silly! I read it as part of some research for a project. I enjoyed 'Nights at the Circus' a lot more.I felt that the writing, though visually engaging, was poor.. If you are looking for subtlety and nuance, forget it with this novel.I do find Carter's work entertaining but the character development is limited and each individual in this particular book is a huge cliche.I had hoped to find the strangeness of the subject I.e. The making of extraordinary and sinister toys and puppets, much more compelling but I was disappointed.

I heard a story by Angela Carter on the BBC about a female vampire. I loved it and with the reviews I expected this to be just as good. It left me flat and bored. Too much talk about dirty feet, and dirty clothes, nothing at all sensual.
